Is it possible that you could just do tryouts on buzzers with competition questions? If your team competes on pyramidal questions (I hope they do), you would want people with deep knowledge on certain subjects, which may not present itself during a tryout test, which generally asks very simple quest...

Our team funded nationals last year by getting sponsors. Another way to fundraise would be to host a tournament, if you have enough players willing to volunteer. Oh, and this issue might be common in some areas. We are also in the Metro-NYC area, and our school has never given us $$$, and never will...

It's certainly viable. 10 teams seems like a reasonable field for this if you try hard. I can't back you up on this one, Will. NAQT has a decent science distribution, but I will admit they have alot of geo (although housewrites have too little geo) and almost no economics, although econ has a very small canon, so having more isn't very feasible.

Studying History

I'm working on becoming a history/geography specialist and, although I think I've got a basic grasp of the high school canon already, I'm not sure how to move forward in studying history. Right now I've just been reading NHBB packets. Are there better and possibly more interesting ways to study?

Geography bee experience is key to becoming a really good geography player, but I'm guessing you don't have that. It is A LOT better than the qbdb search. This one actually searches using all of the words in the search.

I did a search for Gabriel Garcia Marquez and got a tossup on 100 Years of Solitude as the second hit. Sometimes you might need to try alternate searches.

I've played on an IS set, and I can say although some answerlines are shared, there are alot that are completely inappropriate for Middle Schoolers, even at MSNCT (unless it's a hard bonus part).

Your point is interesting. Although it could hypothetically work, tossups would have to be extremely long and there would be quite a restriction on answer lines. I'm surprised nobody mentioned bonuses. You really couldn't write those at all this way without teams with the same school level (ms, hs, ...
