Re: Wisconsin NAQT State Championship, 4/25/15 (Appleton, WI

So, after examining several different possible dates, I've determined (with approval from Jeff) that the 25th really is the best date. We would probably be unable to get a critical mass of Lawrence staffers for the two preceding weekends because of various scheduling conflicts, April 4th is Easter w...

Re: Flashcarding

But if you flashcard something, it seems difficult to accurately portray all of the different options as flashcards unless there are like, six cards for each clue. Perhaps this is just a problem for more difficult questions where clues start being used for multiple purposes. 1) Making a ton of flas...

I believe only Williams Bay attended Nationals. That being said only 3 Wisconsin teams, JV included, qualified for nationals.
Yeah, but far be it from me to impede Quizbowl in Wisconsin. I'll update by the end of the week.

Re: Wisconsin NAQT State Championship, 4/25/15 (Appleton, WI

Again, though, there are many available dates on the WI calendar. This might be different if it were a state with a negligible NHBB presence or a state with a packed calendar, but neither of those things hold here, and the SSNCT issue merely compounds that. I still don't see any reason why this is ...

Re: Wisconsin NAQT State Championship, 4/25/15 (Appleton, WI

I strongly urge you to switch this date if at all possible. NHBB has had a growing presence in Wisconsin over the last few years, and we are likely to have multiple Wisconsin teams at our National Championships that same day. Moreover, NAQT's small school Nationals is this same day too, and I can i...

Wisconsin NAQT State Championship, 4/25/15 (Appleton, WI)

The Lawrence University Quiz Team will be hosting the Wisconsin NAQT State Championship on April 25, 2015 on our campus in Appleton, Wisconsin. This tournament will be using NAQT IS-146, and will use untimed rounds. I (Alex Damisch) will be the Tournament Director and primary contact for this event....

Re: ACF Fall 2014 - General Discussion

Just some grammatical minutiae/weird wording I noticed while reading tonight: This material was used as the background for many paintings by medieval artists like Duccio and Cimabue, and it was also used for halos until much later. [10] Mendelssohn’s trip to Scotland also inspired this overture, whi...

Tournaments/Being Competitive

I'm not sure if this is the kind of thing that the staff was looking for in this subforum, but if so and this gets approved, I'd be interested in hearing peoples' thoughts. A rather long backstory to get to the point: On the way to Fall, I was suddenly reminded that I hadn't warned Abby, a freshman ...

First off, I'll echo the sentiments above with respect to the set overall. Thank you so much to the editors for your hard work, it was a ball to play. (We were also absolutely elated and honored to make the set, possibly Lawrence's first time ever, so that was really cool.) There were just a couple ...

Re: The (Under?)representation of LGBT Culture and History i

Well, this should be fun. Another thing I just thought of--it depends on how one defines LGBT+ culture, or how one defines its representation in quizbowl, but there are a large number of quizbowl-significant LGBT+ figures who do, in fact, come up regularly--in literature alone (and even at the high ...

Re: Quinterest: Hassle-free Database Search

Quinterest has been acting weirdly for me on Chrome for the past few days; search terms are just not returning any results whatsoever and the "Tournament" drop-down isn't showing any tournaments, just "all." It works in interface mode and on other browsers I tried. I updated Chrome and still no dice.

On the flip side, programs with significant female presences in that coterie may have no trouble in this (I don't want to make Minnesota seem like a paragon of male female relations, but our club has usually had women in key leadership positions and has seemingly had less of an effort in recruiting...

Late to the party, but I'm in Appleton if somebody needs an extra staffer for a high school tournament. It's pretty out of the way for most things and I don't have a car, but I have a pretty good handle on the bus system.

That said, I think we as a community tend to have a very backwards attitude towards training new moderators. One of my approximately three buzzes at 2013 ICT was first-cluing "polio" on a clue about a certain disease in India. About a year prior I was at a travel clinic getting my shots to go to India (among other places), and the waiting room had readings about India that included nearly the exact same fa...

I know it's TBD, but I'm very curious to hear more about how the "editors will tell you what distribution your submissions should adhere to" will work. I gather that there just be a few stock half-distributions that people are assigned, presumably at random?
