Also, Taejong launched the Oei invasion, not Sejong This has been fixed. Sorry about this mistake! I don't know what the wording of the actual tossup is, but my understanding is that the third Oei expedition (1419) was sent out during Year 1 of Sejong's reign. At that point, Taejong was alive (he a...

Re: 2016 Terrapin General Discussion

As a freshman who played his first college set ever, I really liked it. I was a bit intimidated going into the tournament, but I ended up having fun. If this is what a "regular" difficulty set is like, then I am all for it. Props to the writers & editors.

Re: Studying Social Science and Philosophy

To learn about philosophers (e.g. Montesquieu, Pascal, etc.), I think a careful reading of their respective Wikipedia articles and then cross-referencing Quinterest and old questions for relevant clues should give you a good idea of what you will need to know (at least at the high school level). You...

Re: Studying Music

For operas at least at the high school level, Quinterest + YouTube (to listen to arias) + Wikipedia summaries should suffice. I personally used Mnemosyne to card those clues and was able to power most opera tossups relatively easily.

Hinsdale Central will be a much weaker team this season. I will be scaling back on quizbowl but our team looks like two hist players, Michael (who's also good at Irish stuff and football) and Atharv (who's also good at geography and rock music and some lit), a fourth scorer tbd but probably a lIt p...

I think there are a couple dark horses to look out for: Fremd and Waubonsie Valley.
I'm pretty sure there are no seniors on Fremd's A team, and I'm assuming Brian K will study a lot this summer and become an even stronger player for Waubonsie.

A minor gripe, but sometimes Neg5 displays a unreasonable number of decimal points for certain stats (like 5.0000000000000000000000009 games played)

I don't know what the set leadin was (or Atalanta or neutrino), but I don't remember thinking "that's just what the definition of a set is;" it didn't lead in with "These collections of elements..." It's Set as in the Egyptian god. The lead in was something like "Although this Egyptian god is often...

Hi guys, As someone who entered quiz bowl relatively late (sophomore year), I have learned much from the community over the past two years. As many of you know, my team is not the strongest; we've had our better years, and right now most of my team doesn't seem motivated to study... With one of my s...
