Re: Canadian Hybrid Tournament (Spring/Summer 2018)

Just played this at the Canadian site in Queen's yestersay, and I can say that it was a good and fun tournament. Questions were well-written and generally well-clued and difficulty was usually at the target level (though there were some incosistencies). There was a fair bit of variance in content be...

Re: CMST: General Discussion

This isn't entirely specific to this tournament, but in the vein of the previous comments, I'll echo what Chris said earlier and say that I don't think there's any reason for a tournament at this level to have only 1.25/1.25 non-Western history per pack. The idea that the entirety of China, India, t...

At what point in the summer will it become available for mirroring? One the same day as the actual event or a couple of weeks later?

Re: How Can We Make Quizbowl More Approachable and Inclusive

Almost every suggestion in here is good, and starting to follow these is, I think, very important. Another one I'll suggest: after another player, on your team or the other one, gets a tossup, never say "I should've buzzed!", "So it was just (the answer)!" or anything else suggesting you knew the an...

Re: Managing Tournament Staff

As an addendum to spreading out teams from a single school, in the event that you need to put multiple teams from a school together in a prelim pool, they should play earlier rather than later.
What problem does this minimise? Just curious.

Re: Specific Questions and Errors

Several players at our site also had problems with the "two violins" tossup, including excellent music players (of whom I am admittedly not one). The confusion seemed to stem from the fact that "this group of instruments" usually, and especially in the precise usage of quizbowl tossup pronunal phras...

Re: Gettier Problems in Quiz Bowl

I definitely agree that these cases are justified but are not knowledge. If I ever explain the Gettier problems to anyone in QB from now on, I'll use the Sibley example. And as far as how we should account for this: I do think it should be avoided. Even though the Sibley clue wasn't actually droppin...

Super pumped for this, will definitely be writing a pack. Looking for a teammate, preferably from (in order) Scarborough, North York or "East York".

Re: XENOPHON

Just played this in Toronto and had a great time! It was an excellent tournament. Well-written questions, good choices of answerlines. I thought the classics content was excessive, and the AmHis was, too (as it usually is in American tournaments), but good topics were chosen within both of those. As...

Apologies, but we won't be moving the event at this time, as it's already too close to the date and too many people have planned around this schedule.

Re: 2017-18 Tournament Schedule: Planning, Discussion, etc.

From what I can tell, it looks like there are currently 5 regular difficulty events (counting Regionals and SCT) planned and no regular+ events. Are there any planned regular+ events? Or would any of the writers of regular events be interested in writing them for a harder difficulty?

2017 Div I ICT Mirror at Toronto (July 29th, 2017)

I am happy to announce that, for all those lacking in the area of D-values (or who were otherwise occupied this April), I will be hosting an open mirror of this year's Division I ICT set on Saturday, July 29th! As this is a top-level national tournament, interested players should be advised that the...

Re: Subject-specific player polls

Zhenglin Liu from Toronto B is still new to the game and is already a beast at auditory fine arts (a decently competitive area in Canada) and his knowledge doesn't seem to fall off at any difficulty level. In his last year he'll be in contention for one of the best opera players. This is a good sho...

I noticed this very late, but I wanted to ask why a couple of my questions weren't used. A policy pursued by this man’s government is the focus of the “functionalism vs. inte...

Re: Canadian Player Poll 2017: Fluency in French Optional

Most people's staffer rankings have taken into account things other than staffing, such as driving people to tournaments and running housewrites, so I'm going to straight-up call this my "Community Involvement Ballot". Bonus points go to people who staff despite not belonging to any clubs and having...

Re: Canadian Player Poll 2017: Fluency in French Optional

My trash ballot. I'm taking into account a wider variety of difficulties here than for academic, but I'm still forcusing on marginal value to a team rather than soloing ability. 1. Nick Penner Canada's ultimate champion of trash over academic certainly owns his territory. This is a somewhat controve...

Re: Canadian Player Poll 2017: Fluency in French Optional

I'm basing these rankings on Nationals difficulty (or, in general, the harder tournaments), and, like Joe, on how much marginal value the player would have in being added to a team, not on how good they would be at soloing. 1. Derek So I've never played with him and only occasionally played against ...
