Re: DATE CHANGE: Illinos Open Mirror 11/22/08 at Brandeis

Awesome. This will basically end up being a doubles tournament (with the exception of Harvard when Natalie comes and one MIT team), final field as follows:

1. YetFeld
2. Harvard
3. Jonathan Magin
4. MIT A
5. MIT B
6. MIT C

We'll play what we have time for (MO-style, I presume) next Saturday.

Also, to anyone interested: While we aren't holding a two-day tournament, I'm definitely up for mirroring the lit, buzzer race, and hilarious ACF submission material that Andrew announced.

Re: ACF Fall discussion (don't read, players at U Wash. site)

Obviously, I wasn't playing, but I thought these were good, well-edited questions. I did note an error in one question (Sethe does not drown Beloved, she cuts her throat, I think), but it didn't really affect the bonus it was part of.

Thanks for coming, everyone, and special thanks to Brian Young for lending us his amazing stats/organizational skills. Speaking of stats, prelims stats can be found here, playoffs here, and finals here.

Again, thanks for coming, and I hope you enjoyed yourselves.

The shuttle has another run at 9, but I also hope we won't run that long... The tournament will be the usual bracket round-robin, followed by rebrackets.

Yeah, it looks like we're going to have to based on the overwhelming proportion of Harvard/MIT teams in attendance.

Before I forget, some notes on transportation, etc.: Getting to Brandeis The Fitchburg/South Acton commuter rail line has a Brandeis-Roberts stop that is adjacent to campus. The line connects to the Red Line of the T at Porter Square (If you are coming on a train or bus that comes into Boston at Sou...

Re: Attitudes towards quizbowl

Also, the fact remains that you don't have to be an amazing player like those who have posted in this thread to enjoy the game. I am not a good player, and I most likely never will be. This does not, however, make me want to avoid difficult tournaments, and it doesn't even preclude me enjoying mysel...

Re: Minnesota Open discussion

Well, for those tossups which spend 35-50% of the clues talking about theory stuff and what piano hero buttons you have to beat it on hard or how many allegro con stupidos it has, are there really people out there getting those clues without having played it or appropriately analyzed it in some way...

Re: Minnesota Open discussion

I didn't play that packet, but on reading the question I think that unless you've played it multiple times (which I have, too... it's pretty fun.), it's hard to buzz until the mention of Greensleeves or Dargason. The piece is known as a bonus part from information mostly contained in the question's ...

I'd play the lit tournament.

Also, in light of the fact that I'm (for some malinformed reason) on a fantasy team, should I quibble about stats errors that change my ppg?

I obviously didn't see any of the packets until they were posted after the tournament, but the copy-editing seemed just fine. None of our readers had any complaints.

Also, Gautam, our math person told me that he particularly enjoyed the math tossups. So, from him, good job on that.

I agree with the harder-than-advertised criticism, and wanted to offer up a few more specific tossup issues: 1. The tossup on Different Trains contained a factual error: Short Ride in a Fast Machine was not written by Philip Glass. 2. The tossups on ablutions, assassination attempts on both Roosevel...

Sure, Eric's pretty cool.

Okay, I'll look into changing the date to Sunday, 11/16. The only problem is that there is a Hebrew school taught in classrooms in that academic quad on Sundays, but we should be able to obtain enough rooms regardless.

I would pretty much agree with what has been said; emphasis on the fact that Packets 5 and 9 had some serious flaws in answer choice and topic distribution. But from what those who are much more experienced with quizbowl than I say, this ICT compares very favorably with all others. The science defin...

I agree with much of what's been said; the 16th-century Italian composers bonus wasn't too hard in general, I thought, but for a novice tournament...perhaps. We had some serious complaints from our sports player, who answered "Royal Rumble" for Battle Royale and was very upset about it. I ...
