Re: HSAPQ National All Star Academic Tournament in 2010
Riley is (unfortunately) 100% correct. Graduation usually means nothing to the son/daughter and everything to the (grand) parents. And since you still live under your parent's roofs, you gotta deal with it. My parents came to many of my high school quizbowl tournaments, but made me miss the middle r...

Re: New Trier Scobol Solo 11/7/09
Furthermore, Solo caters to Chicagoland teams who by and large go to good tournaments (right?). Granted, I wasn't in attendance this year, but this proposed tweak in distribution shouldn't necessarily crank up difficulty and thus won't turn people off.

Re: New Trier Scobol Solo 11/7/09
To clarify, I don't doubt Mr. Reinstein's work ethic or efficiency, I simply think its silly to put the effort towards what is currently accomplished. Also, I'd rather not nitpick about whose "new" distribution is best. As long as you somewhat follow the norm (for me, that's m ACF ), you'l...

Yesterday was lots of fun; thanks to Chicago for hosting. Every time I attend an event at Harper, I continue to be utterly impressed by Chicago's program. To respond to Jack: there are at minimum 20 tossups that decide a game. To single out a particular one is short-sighted. The reason why you saying you happened to lose a game by a particular margin because of the question is not an argument for anything is because it isn't. You very easily could ha...

I too do not think top tier tournaments should include trash. By that, I mean Nats, ICT, and other stuff where "champions" are crowned. Losing by 10 because you couldn't pull a 2 Live Crew album (a great question, by the way) is brutal (and un-academic, unfair, etc.) Having 1/1 for circuit...

Reinstein is right that Illinois isn't as bad as people say it is; we have good teams who go to good events every weekend. The problem, as I've always said, is the ultimate goal. For all but, say, 1-4 teams, IHSA State is the be-all end-all (those 1-4 try to do their best at nationals). Not saying t...

I'll second the Benet's recommendation. It seems to have a bad reputation in quizbowl because you can't get any depth from it (justifiably so), but breadth isn't a bad thing either, especially at high school levels.
