I've always found note carding to be the best strategy. Try to find clues that come up multiple times especially, you'll find that they will continue to come up in whatever set you do for tryouts. You don't need to use notecards to become good at quiz bowl. That's just another form of rote memoriza...

Buzzer-based competition is always disastrous when you can only buzz in following the conclusion of the question and you have 8 different kids who all know the answer, thus making the competition a test of reflexes rather than actual knowledge. The latter is superior, generally speaking (Adam Silverman is an extraordinary case). IMSA and Hunter exemplify this. Also, define well-rounded. Do you mean 4 people who can each buzz in on every category or 4 specialized individuals?

I actually did get that bonus part on 36-30, and I did learn it in APUSH. Why use a single elimination playoff format at all? You could double bracket it the way HSNCT does and still have a relatively small number of rounds in the playoffs.
