Re: Quiz Bowl Survivor: 50 Buzz, 49 Neg
I believe that Jason Keller quit quizbowl to focus on crossword puzzles (and possibly also competitive Scrabble) and has been extremely successful at this. I believe there was actually an epidemic of people quitting quizbowl for scrabble around 2007, which claimed at the very least Jason Keller and...

Re: Field Set for 2014 National History Bowl / Updated Seeds
Out of curiosity, did anyone ever post the playoff results from last year's playoffs? If not, its ok, since everyone is probably be preparing for this year's Nationals now. Another thing is that does anyone know where to find the results from last year, now that the new brackets are on the website?...

Re: VCU Spring Tournament VI (03/01/2014; New Kent, VA)
I left during the (one-game) final between Maggie Walker A and Richard Montgomery. Cave Spring A was clear third, WJ and Loudoun County tied for 4th if I'm reading my file correctly, and GDS finished out the top six. The stats are on my computer; I will get them to Cody who will get them into proper...

I am not in any way affected by this, but I am curious: We are gauging interest with participating teams on whether this tournament will follow NAQT rules or PACE NSC rules. Which aspect(s) of the difference are you interested in? Timed vs untimed? Bouncebacks vs no bouncebacks? 15-point powers vs 2...

High Tech was not in a tie. The other tiebreakers (Dorman/DCC; TJ/Blair/MW) have scores, so I believe they happened.

Re: Chicago Open 2013 (7/20-21/13)
I think the idea is this: Original brackets of 9/10 play 9RR on packets from bracket A (as they have the bye). Playoffs are top 3/middle 3/bottom x. The top two brackets are 5RR, while the bottom is 7RR. The first five rounds use four packets from the bottom group from bracket B and an editor packet...

I found all the 7-3 data, so: Most playoff opponents: 9 (Northmont) Fewest playoff opponents: 3 (Guilford B) Best Sat opponent record: 65-35 (Saint Joseph (IN), Mountain Lakes, Dorman B, LASA B) Worst Sat opponent record: 49-51 (Guilford B) Considering playoff opponents only: 1. Re: 2013 HSNCT discussion
I can almost do the 7-3 data; the TJ A and Dorman B pages throw an error so I will have to look through everybody else's pages to find their opponents which might take a bit. If we go by "Saturday winning percentage of opponents who made the playoffs", which seems to be what matches what y...

I just want to chime in and say that the online schedule/score system at NHBB Nationals last weekend was the best idea I've ever seen implemented at any quiz bowl tournament (from a player's perspective). I really hope to see more national tournaments using this sort of system in the future. That b...

Perhaps I'm missing something, but if everybody has a bye round, why add points? (Naturally you're going to get the same results either way, so it's not as though it's wrong; it just seems like extra work.)

The goal is definitely to help with people movement. Re: Region 5 SCT - Feb. 9 at UT - Knoxville
I think the idea behind the schedule is that you don't play a final unless it's a tie. You need 7 for the first round robin, 7 for the second non-repeat round robin, packet 15 is tiebreaker questions or half-packet tiebreakers (or maybe third-packet tiebreakers if you're paranoid) and packet 16 is f...

2. What were Ted's thoughts on this clue? I am of course not Ted, but Ted made the comment at the time that he wondered whether he never heard any questions about the subject because it was actually hard, or because people wouldn't write the question for a tournament he was at, and that now he knew.

New Trier just expressed strong interest, so this might be a moot point! Yay! For 18 the 6-6-6 then 9-9 idea looks interesting... So... in a three-way 4-1 tie in the initial group phase, the top PPB team would advance automatically, while the other two would play a half-packet? Re: Help me schedule a tournament!
Suppose you have three teams, A, B, and C, all of which are tied at X-1. Team A has the highest score in whatever paper tiebreaker you're using, so by most reasonable three-teams-two-spots scenarios Team A is in and Team B and Team C have to play a play-in game, or are likewise advanced/eliminated ...

I'm assuming the SBVZ are the blue buzzers? We replaced them after Chris Ray, Phil, and Jeff all buzzed in on the same question and all three lights lit up (in a row, at least). Since we were in the middle of a game, we did not take the time to disassemble; we put them down, got the new one up, and ...

Actually, this is a good idea. And PPG would work since you can put in 0 under games played for every player in the third match. Points per bonus would be a mess unless you did manual calculation. Individual PPG would be right, but team PPG would not really be right, is what I meant. And yes, PPB w...

I think the 6/6/5 scenario would be best. Yes, some teams only get 4 prelim games, but everybody else only gets 5, which means there should be plenty of rounds left for playoffs of some kind. In fact, you could run a round-robin playoff (top two from each pool, etc.); four more rounds for (almost) e...

Six rounds is, I think, fairly hopeless. Any round-robin requires an odd number of rounds to finish, so if you can squeeze out another round somewhere to get to seven, you can run pools of seven. If you could convince someone to stay home, you could run two different 3x4 round robins (three rounds, ...
