Chris -- Dude. Chill out. I never accused anyone of hating on our region (or of anything else), and I'm not sure why you decided to flip out on me like that (and act like it was the third time you'd called me out or something). Did you even read this thread? People were speculating whether the ranki...

I feel certain, after this weekend, that Dorman would win most tournaments they played no matter where. I imagine most of those other teams listed would be competitive in any region, as well. I guess we'll see in May, if not sooner. So Dorman won first and third at the Gov's School tournament this ...

How many is a few? And I'm not sure what you mean by southern, but we've got a big region, so it could be that those teams wouldn't be making the trip to Atlanta anyway, so it wouldn't have an impact on your tournament or theirs. Or that those teams would have reassessed whether making the trip to D...

In the southeast we regularly see teams like (not including the aforementioned teams), MLK, Dorman A/B, James Island, Brindlee Mountain, Dunbar, Indian Springs, Ezell Harding, and Danville. There is no dearth of great teams in the Southeast. I think the mid-atlantic needs to get over its god mental...

Re: Walton
Timed rounds or fewer rounds would have helped. Timed rounds have generally been opposed by most teams/coaches in our area (and many outside of it); in fact, I think I'm one of the few people who doesn't work for NAQT who actually favors them. So that's not really an option. We can certainly offer ...

SCT Hosts (Crossposted from Yahoo)
NAQT has released their list of SCT hosts. I usually check this board, and not the Yahoo! group, so I had to be told by a teammate. For the benefit of others with similar tastes, the message was: Players and Coaches -- NAQT is pleased to announce the first list of four-year hosts of Sectional Champi...

As a very late sleeper, I endorse the above post. I've staggered through way too many tournaments after too little sleep. But I doubt anything will change. Considering that people leaving early to get home at a decent hour seems to have become a major problem as of late, bumping back tournament star...

Why was the Andrew Hart packet (yes, I know he got heavily edited) so much easier than the others? I wondered that, myself. Honestly, if ACF Fall were all at this level (making it pretty much a novice- only tournament), I wouldn't have a problem; I probably wouldn't have played, but we would defini...

It seems like it wouldn't really be worth going to for a good team. I will say, when I was in high school, we went to a few tournaments with not great or crappy questions (typically house-written), and I was glad we got the extra chance to play. But I can't blame a coach for deciding it's not a good...

Not to sound snarky, but what about hosting a quizbowl tournament? And this could be an interscholastic event or even an intramural. There is nothing wrong with fundraising outside of tournaments. Oh, no, I wasn't saying there was. I think anything a team can do to raise money is great if the playe...

Re: College Tournaments Using High School Questions
If you insist on running a tournament on high school questions, why not think about mirroring one of the better house-written tournaments? Thomas Jefferson, Richard Montgomery, and Governor's School all run well-written, 20/20 style tournaments that are obviously appropriate for new players but whi...

You really shouldn't deny someone points based on not knowing which is the familial name. I tend to agree, although one could easily make the opposite argument; after all, we wouldn't take George if we really wanted Washington, so why should we ignore other cultures' traditions? Perhaps more direct...

While NAQT doesn't seem to have a specific rule against it (at least that I can find), the spirit of several other rules seems to be that such a delay could be punished, and in fact, time could even be put back on the clock in such an event. I think this is one thing Chip Beall gets kinda right, and has for a number of years. Two or three sites that are distant geographically (and perhaps temporally, to minimize graduation conflicts) with top teams advancing at NAQT's cost seems to be the easy and sensible idea. However, don't do as Chi...

Re: College Bowl teams in the South
Out of curiosity, do schools in the South like Duke, Vanderbilt, UNC, etc. have active and competitive quizbowl teams? The reason I ask is I have yet to find up to date home pages for any of these schools like the ones that Harvard, Stanford, and Chicago have for instance. Also, I see that none of ...

The same could be argued about other subjects as well. Literature in an academic setting isn't just about who wrote what work with what characters in what year. We're planning to do our high school tournament at UGA on Oct. 13. We may be far enough away and draw from different enough areas where it's not an issue, but it might help you draw more Georgia teams (and us possibly get some Florida teams?) if you went with the November date.

More germanely to this thread, here is a proposal: CUT format may not be a bad idea, but it should be used on novice-level collegiate questions, not on high school questions, because collegiate players should never play high school questions.
