Re: Transition from Middle School to High School

I guess the best option would be to write the state series. My middle school did not have Scholastic Bowl, but I would imagine that it is similar to the high school scene in the fact that many coaches only care about winning state. Therefore, writing the state series would cause coaches to want to p...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

Oh noes! Prospect is canceling their participation in tomorrow's MSL frosh/soph tournament due to a transportation 'scheduling error'! Dave Garb, your school is in their district, are you having the same issues??? This could really mess things up if half the conference is a no-show tomorrow! :aaa: ...

Re: Advice on question writing companies

Our conference uses Avery Questions and I cannot tell you how horrible they are. They are not pyramidal in the sense that the first clue is often the easiest clue. All literature seems to be pop lit, meaning you will hear more questions on Harry Potter than you will on the works of Tolstoy or Dicken...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

But aren't regionals and sectionals the IHSA, while the student board will be a component of the IHSSBCA? If you bothered to read, you would notice that we are talking about the new IHSA board. This sounds like a good development, though the restrictions of members (geographic, age, white people) s...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

Question regarding IHSA rules... When I look over my copy of the IHSA rules, it seems that a player giving the "wait" gesture to teammates is not illegally communicating. That didn't occur to me that it could be used as part of game strategy until one of our games at Loyola Saturday. Duri...

Therefore, when I call a team a "bad team", I am not saying that you are a dumb bunch of people, you are a bad program, and everybody from Richmond is inadequate. What I am saying is that, at this moment, you have not done the work to be considered anything other than a bad team in the co...

Hey, all! A few things to post on here, then I will hang up and listen to your comments ;) 1) First and foremost, as the coach of a team that is just starting to come out of our "conference-only" schedule again and make appearances at tournaments, I would like to restate that Brad, Kristi...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

These are going to sound repeteitive after Garb's comments, but I need to make a few notes: 1. This tournament basically confirmed what I already knew. Rockford Auburn and Loyola were vastly superior to us, proving that the big four are not going to be caught by us (or probably anyone else) anytime ...

Re: Studying U.S. History

David McCullough is really good. I'm not just saying that because he graduated from my school. Otherwise, that massive 3 part Shelby Foote Civil War series is pretty good. I can't say I've actually made it through all of the books, but I read about half of the first one, and it was very helpful. Da...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

First giving results from our team: We brought four A teamers and our B team captain. Each of our A teamers went 4-3, while our B teamer went 3-4. The frustrating part was that we had three people that were 4-2 going into the last round (David and I included). These three people all lost, but by a c...

Since this thread has developed into the Solo prediction thread, I might as well give mine. No, Obama does not want the good developing to become elite. He wants to change the rules so the good can become elite without working.

Re: Illinois '08-'09

I've been thinking about segregation between serious and casual, and all I can think of is - What happens to a kid who plays on a historically casual team who has the interest and abilities to lead a serious team, but is unaware that such opportunities exist? If we allow the serious vs. casual deba...

Also, Nick, you like my new avatar? I love it. What's next, Barack in front of the Confederate flag? Going back to quizbowl, Garb is unfortunately correct. Teams in Illinois just do not care about good quizbowl. Right now, an Illinois style tournament will enjoy greater success than a non-Illinois ...

Thoughts on Ultima (with help from Garb, who typed more of this than nick): 1. First, it needs to be said that the tournament was excellently run. Re: Why isn't there talk of this? (Nadal d. Federer)

At this point, this has the potential to be what saves men's tennis from relative obscurity. You have two great players who can stomp the rest of the field, and now Nadal's proven that he can beat Federer on grass. All we need is a Federer victory over Nadal on clay. I doubt it will touch the level...

The one thing I took away from ACE (in terms of this thread) was that Carbondale isn't good. They are really, really good. If this is referring to me, this is not what I meant on my post. As one of his Buffalo Grove teammates, I find it hard to believe that there are 20 players in state better than Danny Bulmash. No player made as big of a difference for their team as he did for our team. Without him, we lost to McHenry, Conant, and Elk Grove and our overall record was 4-4 (counting ...

Re: Illinois '07-'08

I have a question about a situation that arose earlier this year at the Wheaton North tournament. My team, Buffalo Grove was 3-1 (without our star Danny Bulmash) and needed to beat our bracket's other 3-1 team Conant to advance on to the next round. The game was tight throughout and when regulation ...
