Re: IHSA regional assignments

St. Viator lost. I have seen this team grow and get better over the season. This team was as dirt broke as any from anywhere. They funded their team out of their own pocket. I had said that the two amazing things to see this year were how utterly tough Carbondale had become and St. Viator coming in...

Whoa whoa whoa. I don't think computational math has any place in quiz bowl. Address your comments to Jeff. He needs to be convinced that math is stupid.

Re: NAQT State/UIUC Solo

This is Dan from Viator posting, against my better judgment, at the behest of "Silent Jeff." Although Jeff and my teammates got a considerable amount of math theory questions right, Jeff especially felt that some of the pyramidal math computation questions were poorly written. In one quest...

Re: NAQT State/UIUC Solo

Will stats for either of these tourneys be posted? Also, I thoroughly enjoyed losing to Auburn freshman Lloyd at Solo. It's totally awesome to see underclassmen competing and like I said earlier, makes me happy for the future. Agreed. I had the same experience. Speaking of distribution, I'd like to ...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

That said, Fremd and in particular Arjun are awesome at math and science. I would be very surprised if they lost to Carmel, even though Carmel is seeded higher. Yeah...through our League and various tourneys, I've had the chance to play Carmel something like 7 times in the last two years. They're j...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

I especially want to thank Auburn for the professionalism they displayed during our match. These kids are a class act, period. I'd like to extend that to every team at the tournament. All the teams that destroyed us did so with courtesy and respect. Thank you. The field at Loyburn was a cut above a...

Re: NIU Huskie Bowl - 2/14/09 - Dekalb, IL

Yeah...I really wanna go. But I'm not so sure this finish qualifies us, as I was told. How much do nationals cost? Maybe I'm dumb, but it's in the hundreds. From my understanding, this wouldn't have been an NAQT qualifier, but it very well could have been a PACE qualifier. PACE is the one you want ...

Agreed. Fantastic questions, fantastic format, fantastic tournament.

Kristin, were you the one that told us that a top-6 finish qualified us for the Nat'l Championship? If so, is that really true?

Thanks.

Re: The predicted demise of Illinois frosh/soph tournaments

Well I certainly hope Illinois frosh/soph tourneys are not dead. Saint Viator is in the very early stages of planning a F/S tourney for next season. (By that I mean we've begun to talk about it.) The school does not give us a budget and we want to use this as a fundraiser. We'd use a house-written m...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

Well, I'm glad to hear this material was somewhat edited. I totally understand now about the 3,4,5-part bonus issue. And I did notice that the questions made an attempt at pyramidality—it was much appreciated. I won't have the packets in front of me again until Monday, but I can think of one buzzer ...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

Just got back from coaching the F/S B Team at the Wheaton North F/S Tourney. Overall, this tournament was just OK. Questions were from Questions Galore and, therefore, awful. There numerous mistakes, hoses, buzzer beaters, and the bonuses alternated between 3, 4, and 5 parts, causing frustration for...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

Stevenson ended up in the same bracket as St. Viator, a team that does not travel but is extremely solid. St. Viator is really good. While these questions were far from good quizbowl, they demonstrated speed and knowledge which places them among the top 14 teams in state. Thanks for the praise, Nic...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

OK just got back from a second-place finish at Fremd. Despite our success, this tournament had many faults, most of them dealing with question quality. Rant beginning: What was up with the distribution? As a Lit/Fine Arts player, I was angered that there were no discernible rules for distribution or...

Re: Illinois '08-'09

I'd just like to congratulate Auburn on a successful F/S Tourney. I thought the Toss-Up quality was superb (although frustratingly easy for a Varsity player coaching a F/S team..,). ACF bonuses and power-pairing were fantastic choices—they should be the norm for all Illinois Tournaments. One comment...
