Re: PHSAT XXII-Princeton, NJ (9/27/2014)

One more tiny note on PHSAT: I was a shame that no book awards were given out. I think that book awards are a great tradition that should be upheld. I'm guessing that if anyone had stopped by the Princeton U library and asked for some used books, they would have gladly provided...... If you did, and...

Re: PHSAT XXII-Princeton, NJ (9/27/2014)

For some reason, I doubt that Yale hosting a tournament 150 miles away is a major reason why Princeton had 14 less teams at their tournament than in 1997. For Bethlehem it would seem a toss up on which to go to. However, They used an "A" set which is what our local Master Minds League use...

Re: The Big Vision: [2] The "Sales Pitch": Talking Up Quizbo

I was talking to my brother a few weeks ago about this topic. He is a scientist who has nothing at all to do with Quiz Bowl. The first thing he said was that the Name " Quiz Bowl" is bad. It makes it seem like Trivia, and not academic at all. He felt that the name could not be worse. Quiz ...

Re: NHBB & USGO Nationals Set Thread

Dave asked for legitimate feedback.

I think we've pretty much killed the sports thing. If I concede that you have won, can we just table it so people can give valuable feedback on the questions used at NHBB & USGO

thanks

Scott,

Thank you for all of the info. I will be working with the schools to see if we can get facilities and a date.
And, I will be working with parents to make sure they are on-board with supporting an effort.

Re: NHBB & USGO Nationals Set Thread

Addendum, because it's the second time I've seen you mention this: there are no "scholarships" (athletic, academic, or otherwise) at Ivy League schools. There is only need-based financial aid. That's one of the defining characteristics of the league. I did misspeak. There are no athletic ...

Re: NHBB & USGO Nationals Set Thread

Well, I mean they have to be in the packet somewhere--if you win by 10 points, any question in the game is significant. This was a sudden death situation. But, it's whatever question comes next. Perhaps it would be best if the Sports stuff came earlier. Also regards the question. The answer is not ...

In my opinion, Pop culture and Sports are as much parts of history than Henry of Navarre is. Re: NHBB & USGO Nationals Set Thread

I really enjoyed the tournament and I thought the questions were very good. My single complaint, and I am not sure anything can be done about it is that the JV semis came down to three people each with 5 points. Eric, Chandler & Dan. The Idea was the first two to get one correct advance. All goo...

Re: How successful has NHBB been at promoting regular quizbo

Bethlehem (NY) participates in History Bowl because Dave Madden came to the region and actively promoted the game. They also actively promote a MS game. The costs for playing in a NHBB regional are a fraction of the cost of playing in quiz bowls. The fact that Masterminds charges a $698 entry fee f...

Some places where there is now History Bowl events and no good HS QB events (to my knowledge) include: eastern Washigton, Wyoming, Nebraska, Central Florida, western Tennessee, Hawaii, and northern Idaho (until this year Portland, OR was in this list and I'm very optimistic that some of these areas...

Masterminds NY

Re: HSQBRank 2013-2014: Witty Subtitle

urnament that goes beyond 5 vs 5 isn't really able to have a difficulty adjustment determined for it, since an adjustment depends on comparing it vs an IS performance (with 4 or 5 players per team). Fred, I am not asking you to rank them based on this. I agree that you would have no integrity if yo...

Fred, I get that, but I am more interested in what you think the adjustment( for the hardness of the question sets they use ) would be. Also in the playoffs they seem to go with the core players, so that may be more interesting to you. If you'd like I can send you the results or point you at them af...

I was looking at the Morlan ranking system and noticed that he makes adjustments for different question sets. What would the adjustment be for the ,NAQT produced, questions read for NYS Master Mind Leagues ? I was curious to see if it really works out. My Kid's team actually got ranked based on 19.8...

Re: The Role of a Moderator

This discussion makes me wonder; Since Pseudonyms seem to be for people playing outside the confines of their school's administration, Do the rules require all members of a team to be from the same school? Could, for instance, a player from Bethlehem team up with a player from Ithaca and play in a N...

Re: Field Set for 2014 National History Bowl / Updated Seeds

I discussed this with my son who is going to his 3rd NHBB in 8 days and will have 2 more NHBBs before he graduates. Speaking as a coach, it seems that the best way to make sure you can crown a champion in a fair manner is to not run 4+ competitions in one weekend so you can spend the time you need t...

Also I am left wondering what happened to the losing team. Why do they get a pass that #Cash-Crew did not. I don't think anyone got a pass. Unless they are accompanied by a description of who the team actually is, they prevent ...

It might be worth mentioning that the field for HSNCT is "full" when you count reservations for state championship qualifiers, and the waitlist already has 26 teams. Well that sort of fixes my problem. Eric told me he did not want to go to it anyway, and I doubt the others would want to g...

I feel fairly good about the HS's chances of winning the NYS Masterminds tournament. I am not sure if that qualifies them for anything else.... Masterminds is a qualifier for NAQT HSNCT (and I suspect that Bethlehem's Prison Bowl performance would have a good case for a wildcard). Interestingly, it...

I think this is awsome - 3 thoughts. 1. Post something on the national page about it so people know to have their devices with them. I suspect you'll see more tablets, as they might be easier to deal with than phones... Also you might want to warn people to be prepared to charge... 2. What will this...
