Did you ask your coach? I'm guessing Sci I is your best bet, but it's just a guess.

I will vouch for Anderson's. They have good, low-cost systems, with simple handpads. Also good customer service in case something breaks.

I find the change to be an inconvenience rather than a problem. It's an extreme response to a situation, but perhaps the restriction can be removed after the situation calms down.

Re: Survey of States

1. How many teams do you have? 2. What percentage does that represent of all high schools? 3. Who runs your state tournament? What constituency controls the organization? 4. Are there any other quiz bowl organizations in your state? 5. What televised quiz bowl do you have? 6. What question distribu...

At one time, at another job, I received $1000 for the year. This included not only quiz bowl, but also science bowl, science fair, math field day, and other academic competitions.

I am not currently paid for coaching.

You can sit in on the sessions with the kids, or go to different ones. Sometimes a coaches program is offered in the afternoon.

How to get better? Practice, practice, practice, as they used to say. ACE camp is also a really good idea. If some of the kids can pony up the $400 or so for the camp in Maryville, not too far away from you (it's close to Knoxville) then competing with the very best in the country can be quite an ey...

Remember also, there's nothing wrong with starting with four freshman and a sophomore. If you guys work, you could be really killer in a couple of years. And by then, you might have built enough attention and interest that the program will continue.

I have never had any experience with Mr. Beall himself, so I cannot speak to that subject. I do know that at one of my own tournaments, when I made a ruling on a dispute that was apparently not the way Mr. Beall had ruled on a similar question, the player that came out on the wrong side of the rulin...

I have tried e-mailing Martinsburg's coach, but to no avail. Or was that to Coach Noah Vale? I get confused. At any rate, I don't believe Oak Hill (in the southern part of WV) has fielded a team, but Oak Glen (in the northern panhandle) used to until their coach died in an auto accident a few years ...

Well, Fred, I can say without danger of contradiction that there's no way in Hades that WV will separate out private schools. I don't think the WVSSAC resolution will go past the state Board of Education, and if it does by some strange string of events then I don't see it withstanding a court...

Let us not get too uppity about quiz bowl questions. Few can stretch players beyond recall, and it is rare to go far up the taxonomy of Bloom to analysis or synthesis. There is a place for speed questions like "Who invented the phonograph?" but a longer question demanding more of the liste...

Mailing list: West Virginia Tournaments 2006-07

If anyone would like to get on the e-mailing list for West Virginia QB tournaments, let me know. Those of you in or near border counties might want to see if there is one nearby. I recognize a couple names here already on the list, but there might be others. I would also like to publicize tournament...
