Re: New England '12-13 comparisons and discussion

I feel like this has been a good year Quiz Bowl in New England and for our school specifically. The MIT tournament was great and I was quite pleased at our showing at Yale a few weeks ago. The WGBH tournament was how we got started and I commend those who made the effort to contact more of these sch...

Organizing Travel

I'm considering organizing my first Quiz Bowl road trip! While my students (grades 9-12) are very excited, I'm a bit terrified. Are there any resources on organizing a trip? I chaperoned the class trip to Washington DC a few times and we went through one of those companies that arranged all the deta...

Re: building the strongest team

I guess what I mean is what factors does a coach use in building a team? Do you have kids take a test in certain subjects? On a 4-person team, do you have fixed slots for science, history, literature and geography? Do you hold try-outs? Usually, at our practices, we just read questions from old pack...

building the strongest team

I'm looking for advice on how to build the strongest team. Our school is relatively new to Quiz Bowl - we just played in our fourth ever tournament, and both the A team and B team placed in the top brackets. In bracket play, both teams tied for 5th - so not the TOP teams, but both equally strong. Pe...

Best Buzzer system

Hi, I apoligize if this topic is addressed somewhere else - I looked but didn't find what was looking for. I just found out that I can apply for some funding that was made available and I'd like to get a high quality buzzer system. I have one system, but I bought it with my own money and my criteria...

Re: Funding help?

Last year, one of the clubs at our school hosted a Trivia Night - much more like pub trivia than Quiz Bowl, but there was only a little bit of pop culture and included local area knowledge like "name the 5 towns that border our town". Teams of 4 could enter for $100 and there was a $500 fi...

Hi,

AMSA would like to attend, bring two teams and two buzzers. I just sent you an email as well.

Hi,

AMSA would like to come. We could most likely bring 2 teams and two buzzers.

Re: Quiz Bowl's Systemic Failure At Expansion and Recruitment

I'm new myself, and perhaps you don't want to hear what I have to say, but I've been surprised at how difficult it is to break into this world. In Massachusetts, there doesn't seem to be any kind of organization heading up quiz bowl. However, 2 years ago, our PBS station started running a High Schoo...

Re: Merits of the KMO?

Our school is new to the Quiz Bowl world. We started because our local PBS station was running auditions for the High School Quiz Show program and after our audition (unsuccessful, I might add), I was looking for events to sustain the momentum and keep a team going. KMO was one of the first events I...

Re: Learning Geography

Although it will only help with basic levels of knowledge, shepperd software site is great because it has interactive games - not just reading atlases. I like to use it on my smartboard with my students - kids like having to touch the country or feature being asked for. There are various levels of d...

Re: neg king/queen/monarch

Since the is in the Newbie forum and I am indeed a newbie, I'd like to add that I love the idea that a neg prize is good because it encourages players to be more aggressive. I think my players are often afraid of being wrong and are hesitant to buzz in until they are certain. I've tried to encourage...

Re: neg king/queen/monarch

For most of my players, they would think it's a hoot. But I do have one student who is very sensitive. When her team didn't win any rounds (she was on the B team and it was our first tournament) she cried. Now part of that is inherent in competetions, and she will hopefully grow from this process. B...

Re: New England Discussion and Date Claims 2011-12

I'm in Marlborough, MA and am just getting a Quiz Bowl team at my school off the ground. Last year, we just did on-line stuff (KMO, Chip Beal's) and tried out for the PBS show (didn't make it.). This year, we participated in tournaments at MIT and the CT Invitational. The kids were new to the pyrami...
