Re: 2010-11 Tournament Schedule

For any Wheaton North lurkers out there, do we know if the same group will be writing the Wheaton North FS next year?

Re: Pre-Nationals Poll

I guess I'll try: (1) Stevenson (2) Auburn (3) Loyola (4) Lisle (5) St. Ignatius (6) OPRF (7) Carbondale (8) IMSA (w00t) (9) Hobo (10) New Trier I did get to play against all of these teams, albeit often with small sample size. All of the teams near the top are dangerous, but I tended to favor consi...

Re: 2010-11 Tournament Schedule

We're hoping for numerous smaller mirrors to attract newer teams with short drive times; for example, NIU is hosting a mirror and a Lisle mirror is almost confirmed, and those two schools are only 45 minutes apart. NIU's mirror is hoping to attract DeKalb, Kaneland, Rochelle, etc., while Lisle's mi...

IDK. I'm just trying to be accommodating. With Brad's blessing, though, I guess I'll stay at January 15.

Both. My attempt to google "Scholastic Community Outreach Program" failed. Also, I like tourneys.

Re: 2010-11 Tournament Schedule

it competes against Winnebago - no overlap team-wise, I guarantee it I might be missing something here, but why not? All I know of Bago's lineup this spring is the top 4 finishers (Auburn A and B, Bettendorf, and Dwight), but they did use an NAQT set, so presumably there would be some potential ove...

Re: 2010-11 Tournament Schedule

I have the building at IMSA reserved for 1-15, but I might be able to reschedule if I act soon. October 16, October 23, or November 13 would probably work for us also. Thoughts?

EDIT: Added a date.

Re: Ben Cooper Memorial Mirror - 5/8 - Champaign, IL

For Robert and Dan-Don: At lunch, after each of you had beaten my C team by a large margin, my C-team freshman was talking about how the morning went, and when the Hobo and Cheif rounds came up, awestruck, he repeatedly asked me "But how does one person get so good?" (He had not yet faced ...

Re: IHSA Advisory Committee

The only thing that I worry about at any regional, regardless of class, is moderator quality. I'd put in to host a regional only because I know that the moderators I put in key positions will keep the matches moving (as much as possible) and do a good job of administering the rules. I can see how t...

Re: Ben Cooper Memorial Mirror - 5/8 - Champaign, IL

Well the best thing to do would have been to play it off, but Dr. Prince and IMSA left under the impression that I had won a head-to-head tiebreaker by virtue of beating them. Just a general FYI: head-to-head is almost never used as a tiebreaker at good tournaments. For the record, I left because I...

Dear Jacob, I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Luckily you have found a supportive group to help you in your quest for better quiz bowl. IMSA won't be playing its normal line-up. Both seniors (Bonny and Weili) will be absent, as well as one junior (Jialin). We're basically getting a head start on '10-'11.

We will be bringing Rose, and she has mentioned wanting revenge on her home school OPRF.

Re: Driver's Ed, Home Economics, etc

Just to be clear here, I am not a fan of Driver's Ed, Home Ec, and the infamous Industrial Arts. I am just bothered by them (in IHSA tourneys) less than other people are. I agree whole-heartedly with Dan-Don (omg never thought I'd say that) in that, if questions on these subjects are to be written, ...

Let me give first mention my biases. I grew up in central Illinois, attending both tiny schools (Tri-Valley in Downs) and large schools (like my alma mater, Normal Community High School in Normal). Much of what I write here is from the viewpoint of someone from central Illinois, not of someone (soon...

I agree. Congratulations to all teams who made their way to Peoria. For all the problems with IHSA State series, it did a pretty goo...

Frankly, I don't expect IMSA to ever really be a power in quizbowl , since the best and brightest of IMSA are too busy working on original research to memorize lists of scientist's names. I disagree. Their new coach seems very driven, and they have the students/resources to become very good. Thanks...

Not that I feel the need to respond to Dan-Don, but my A team did go 7-3 at Ultima, losing to Carbondale and Culver A in the morning and losing by 10 to New Trier in the afternoon in the match that decided the consolation round. Therefore, we're not without results outside of what you call "bad...

As promised, I will address some of the attacks on IMSA that have been put forth. There are some tournment hosts who will not invite IMSA (because of the way they [used to?] recruit students), but I don't think that applies to these tournaments. I have heard these allegations before, but only on for...

Having glanced at the stats from all the Dunbar mirrors, it looks like IMSA's bonus conversion was around that of teams who should be sneaking into the playoffs at HSNCT. From the sadly small sample size of real tournaments I have to work with right now, it seems like they can acquit themselves wel...
