Personally, I'm vehemently against high school teams competing in college tournaments, regardless of their skill levels. From the standpoint of the college team, I don't see what it would have to gain by defeating or losing to a high school team. It's a no-win situation. What's the difference betwe...

Re: Pre-discussion questions
Who cares if a team has four men, or four women, or four whites, four asians, or four blacks, as long as that's the best team your school can produce? The issue is this (I think): if there's something about quizbowl that "scares away" members of certain demographic groups, then many schoo...

Re: Pre-discussion questions
3) Diversity: do you have any specific strategy, a best practice, or a general team philosophy that welcomes girls/women and others from non-Caucasian or non-Asian demographic backgrounds? What works best in this case? Why should this be an issue at all? Why not just concentrate our efforts into ma...

We used to do about 18 var tournaments a year. 9/11 changed what our school board will let us do. Just curious about this statement.... What is the reasoning behind this? I can't personally speak for Mr. Barry but I remember that during the months after 9/11 there were quite a few school boards (ma...

Re: Quizbowler in the New York Times
I like how this article tries to reinforce the notion that qb players are nerdy, cloistered douches filled with random academic knowledge but absolutely no awareness of the outside world. I have to say that there's not much the newspaper can do if he really can't name two Britney Spears songs or De...

"I am quite aware of how much I aggravate other teams," he said Thursday, two days after graduating from Byram Hills High School in Westchester. "The only thing is I don't know how to not aggravate them. When I walk in the room, the karma changes." Wow, not arrogant at all. Seri...

Re: Quizbowler in the New York Times
Still, as impressive as he is, Nate doesn't know everything. Asked to name two Britney Spears songs he could only come up with one. ("Toxic. They played it at the prom.") Asked to name the shortstop for the Yankees he drew a blank. ("I have no idea.") When asked his cellphone nu...

Would it be impossible to also find perfectly reasonable questions among the archives? The point is that perfectly reasonable questions are the only kind that should ever be found. There are some academics who would argue that a film clue is just as significant as a literary one. I suppose they are...

As far as I'm concerned conspiracy theorists can think what they like. It's just a little insulting for people who don't know me, and weren't at the tournament to question my performance, challenge my integrity, generally insult me, post non-publicly available information about me, etc. Alright, ye...

Maybe since this kid was seeing more than 3/4 of the bonus questions he just ran into more questions that he didn't know. Maybe he didn't feel the need to take things so seriously since he was crushing the opposition. Maybe he didn't think about the questions and just passed on them in an attempt t...

if this kid is from ohio, what is to say if he had not heard all of the tossups before at a different NAQT tourney using the same set? And his bonus conversion could be explained by the fact that not all the bonuses are read at NAQT tournaments. Thus he got the ones he knew and blanked on the rest....

Re: by the way
sometime DCC has to have a year where they do bad that doesn't involve them kicking most of michigan's ass somehow That "somehow" is DCC consistently putting forth more effort to improve than everyone else in Michigan. If you want to eventually beat them, you should...you know...put forth...

I'm not sure if a 170 point loss can be shrugged off as a fluke so easily. DCC and Petoskey's PPG and bonus conversion at NAQT States indicated that they're legitimate (granted Will did seem to have a meltdown game against tough competition in the playoffs) plus the questions at MSU States pander to...
