Come to think of it, there are a few people I'd like to play that I've never had the opportunity to compete against: Jason Loy, Melissa McCush, Mike Wehrman, Ken Jennings, Matt Weiner (unless you played at CO 2002 or you count the occasional Yahoo chat practice), and a lot of other people. I'm not p...

Well, for the record, CBI has always been paid for through the university and the other legit tournaments that the club did came through the student organization that got funds from tournament hosting and the student organization activities allocation process. As the club absolutely died during my y...

I remember kicking a chair once, but never throwing one. Also, I've scored pretty high (40+) on those online AQ tests, so I may actually be slightly autistic, or more likely, as Aspie (social ineptitude, mad math skills, and adherence to routines, so I'm 3/3 on major indicators). By the way, not eve...

Name names? Duh, the NAQT writing and editing staff! We look out for each other. Also, Raj, don't make fun of me for doing thumb exercises. You know who else did thumb exercises? :kenj: This guy. You would have done much better on Jeopardy! if you had done thumb exercises. It's a testament to your i...

If anybody tries to beat me with an ACF plaque, I'll defend myself with the copy of ~Coming of Age in Samoa~ I won at an ACF Fall tournament in 2004 (3rd individual in Div I behind Yaphe and Teitler). Plus, as an NAQT writer, I have an elite cabal of defenders who don't want me beaten up. Once again...

Actually, I've been in the grad program at Mizzou for economics since fall and should have my MA in December. As for my playing in other tournaments, that didn't happen as the club (that did the non-CBI events) died in the year I took off from school between undergrad and grad school (and the fact t...

Officially, Missouri should theoretically have 4 out of 50 tossups and 2 out of 20 bonuses be trash. I agree with Weiner that the single-subject worksheet is fallible when not utilized correctly. Anyway, trash has its place; I'm just not sure it warrants an entire worksheet in a playoff round. I'd s...

On the Missouri hs php board, there's actually a discussion about lit; some people think it's too list-oriented (i.e. works and authors). Technically, the MO distribution is as follows: (tossup/bonus) Lit: 10/4 Math: 10/4 Social Studies: 10/4 Science: 10/4 Fine Arts/Performing Arts: 3/1 Grammar: 3/1...

Wow, there are definitely some surprises on that list! Division I: Iowa State on the waitlist definitely surprised me. I thought they were in. Three British schools??? Last year, only one (Goodenough) showed up and they got last place! Anyway, it looks like the Mid-Atlantic will be well-represented,...

As for the case for Virginia, I think they had the 7th-highest bonus conversion rate in all of Division I. That should merit some consideration. I agree that the Mid-Atlantic competition was quite close. My formula has Virginia at 17th, but that SOS was based on a round robin. A correction for the S...

If I recall correctly, I think that NAQT does, on rare occasions, invite a lower-finishing team over a higher-finishing one. I think Northwestern over Minnesota last year was an example. However, NAQT will probably try to invite the higher-bracket teams first. Jason Mueller (Not speaking for NAQT be...

Edit: I incorporated a new SOS calculation for the West, incorporating the bracketed double round-robin. Although it helped to increase the ratings of the top bracket teams and lowered the ratings of the lower bracket teams, Stanford Labe still holds a slight lead. Another adjustment is necessary. A...

As for the Stanford DII bracket discussion, my strength of schedule was based on a round robin, not bracketed playoffs. Although I do agree that teams that made the upper bracket should be seeded before the lower bracket teams, I wasn't able to correct it and I'm not even sure if I could correct it ...

Edit: I now used a new SOS for the Mid-Atlantic Sectional. It helped a little, but every little bit helps. Another Edit: Now with the new SE TUH stats. SE teams improved. Well, I finally got around to finishing the Div I stats. I still have a few Div II sectionals to do. Rank Team P Sect 1 Berkeley ...

I just thought of something else for your formula, Patrick. For strength of schedule, you could include something like half of the opponents' TCU and bonus conversion. (Compensating for opponents' winning percentage wouldn't work, of course, as each sectional field has a winning percentage of .500 a...

Here's the formula I used last year for my predictions (and yes, it does include strength of schedule). (Bonus conversion) + 50*(power per tu heard) + 25*(winning percentage) + .5(opponent bonus conversion) + 25*(opponent power per tu heard). If I have time, I'll calculate these values and/or modify...

CBI does suck. Too bad Mizzou's been reduced to a CBI-only school by our lack of transportation and pathetic leadership. Anyway, my team won our campus intramural Saturday, so I'll be coming with my posse (hopefully I'll have a higher-scoring posse than last year). I hope we don't get fifth again. J...

Well, it depends on the tournament. For regular-season tournaments, I would say that the students should all be attending the same high school. For tournaments regulated by governing bodies (such as PACE, NAQT, state championships regulated by a governing body such as a state athletic or academic as...
