With one week to go, the Newcomer field is closed. We still have one space open in our Varsity field.

Re: Welcome to the 2014 Penn Bowl Discussion forum

I'd just like to add to the praise for the set. I feel the history distribution was to-to-bottom stronger than last year and there were some really fun ideas I liked, particularly the Aaron Burr treason TU. Delaware had a great time and looks forward to next year's incarnation.

Re: UDFT III @ University of Delaware (SCOP Mirror), 11/1/14

We regret to announce that due to an unanticipated staff shortage, we will have to reduce our field cap from 32 to 24 teams. However, there is still space available, so do remember to register!

Re: The Big Vision: [9] Re-focusing on the Correct Opponents

We can also not forget that in addition to all the bad-quizbowl areas across the country, there are a lot of blank slates where there's basically nothing doing in terms of academic competitions. Delaware is a great example: since the Chip-esque TV show went under some 5-6 years ago, pretty much all ...

UDFT III has received gold certification from PACE. This means that the top 20% of teams (rounded up to the nearest integer) will qualify for PACE NSC on the weekend of May 24-25th! More reason to play!

Re: Praise Song

I would like to thank Joe Nutter and Shan Kothari for, despite dealing with the near-impossible situation of having to work with Joe Brosch as a head editor and having something like 10 people abandon writing assignments when we did the MSU/UD housewrite, still taking out time to teach me how to wri...

Re: NAQT-format submission tournament

I, too, would be all for this tournament happening and would be happy to write for a packet submission style. At least in my experience talking to members of my team, I think the shorter questions do make a big difference because a long day 8-9 line tossups can really wear one down. I think the fast...

Re: Building a Quality Culture

First and formost, if you know that many of these students have a conflict with the same events, don't go head to head with them. As much as half of my high school team did the Literary Magazine on Wednesdays, so that was the one day when no practice was offered. If everyone's out with different eve...

Re: It's Academic discussion

Clearing up the distinction between what is and is not quizbowl will go a long way to the growth of the circuit. Quizbowl is a trivia game. It's Ac and other "bad" formats are trivia games. Jeopardy! and Trivial Pursuit a trivia games. They are members of the same family, but each has its ...

Re: It's Academic discussion

Well one difference here is that at pyramidal tournaments teams pay over $50 or so and commit an nearly an entire day just to get creamed. At least on It's Academic (not sure about other shows) it's essentially free and takes a fraction of the time. I suppose this is true, but at the same time, kid...

Re: It's Academic discussion

I'll report once again that the largest single item coaches indicate to me as to why they leave tournaments early or do not compete at all is that the games are too lopsided with their team losing badly too many times. Yet, when I report this, the general attitude is that I should ridicule these te...

Re: My Problem With Studying for Quiz Bowl

Even if you plan on specializing, there are a few things that are so frequent that you should at least give them a cursory study. Shakespeare comes to my mind. You don’t have to read the plays, just knowing a plot outline and characters were immensely helpful, even when I was playing junk quizbowl f...

Re: Buzzer Systems

My team also much prefers the handheld ones to the tabletop buzzers. However, durability is a big issue, especially if you're going to have a lot of freshmen who aren't very focused and start playing with it. Our last system started with 12 buzzers, but by the time we replaced it had just 9, because...

Re: Books "for Quizbowl"

For newer players, I'd recommend Don't Know Much About History by Kenneth Davis. It's a very good overview of the most important topics in American History, and makes them interesting by explaining why. http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Know-Much-About-History/dp/0380712520 I'd also recommend a trip over t...
