I'll just say this...aside from people who go to Minnesota, there are few places from which it's more convenient to go to Minnesota than to Chicago. This is true. You know what else is true? Aside from people who go to (insert school here), there are few places from which it's more convenient to go ...

I was at the Drake mirror where we snuck into the playoffs before losing to eventual runner-up Gabriel Lyon of Wisconsin. After hearing the first four rounds, I thought the questions were going to be horrible, but every match I played after that was of significantly better quality. Maybe it was just...

Ugh... that would be awfully annoying. I would also say practice on old questions if they are available. Are they available??? The alternative (may I also say required suggestion) is try to write your own questions based on the practice questions. Don't do it intentionally to stump each other. I be...

Packet playing/reading/studying is the most important aspect of getting good at quiz bowl. Until you read packets, encyclopedia articles are worthless. You don't know what information is useful to glean from an article until you see what clues or anecdotes are typically written into questions. And p...

With my first semester in the college circuit concluded, I'll take a stab at some of the points raised here. First, let's just talk about what it's like to transition to the college game. It's really hard. My high school competition was played on 90% shit questions...a disgusting combination of Patr...

One wonderful aspect of high school quiz bowl are the buzz words...those stock phrases that are always used to describe one particular thing.

There's one aspect of this Airwolf discussion which seems to be lacking to me: The fact that the best trash teams are not usually composed of undergrads, but instead of older, veteran players. Therefore, shouldn't you write some harder questions to appeal to that clientele which is consistently giv...

Re: Another example
I don't know if this echoes Matt's thoughts, but it seems to me that the 1980s questions had more nichey answer selection and the 1990-2000 questions were had more mainstream answer selection. 80s questions were more likely to be Airwolf, 90s questions more likely to be Full House...JMO Another exa...

The equally subjective sense I got from TRASH regionals was that there was a category called 1975-1990, and a category called 2003-2006, and that's what got asked. The 90s and the really old stuff (which, by the way, is equally accessible or equally inaccessible to all age groups--no reason not to ...

My main problem is that this thread is downplays plagiarism by lumping it in with things a tournament editor should take care of. I really didn't mean to drag Matt into this, and actually I started off by saying that I was sure he didn't intend to talk about other Deep Bench problems on this thread....

When instances of :chip: plagiarism occur, people bring it to light because it's a despicable practice. While I'm willing to believe that whoever submitted that question genuinely thought that it was a house-written tossup, at some point, someone at Iowa (or elsewhere) incorporated that question in...

First of all, Rothlover basically summed up a lot of my reactions to this tournament. In general, I had a great time and am looking forward to playing the tourney next year. But I have some concerns too. Observations of a shitty trash player: The overriding theme: Fuck you anyone born after 1985. Po...

On the contrary, it is unreasonable to expect me to know whether Iowa or Minnesota was responsible for this act when I have no special knowledge of anyone at those teams and no means to investigate. It is unreasonable to expect the tournament editor to catch plagiarized questions. Aside from specifically remembering the exact question, the editor would have to search for every single tossup (and presumably bonus) in the Archive or elsewhere. Let's not forget that this doesn't rule out plagiaris...

Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament (Armistice Day)
This was a NAQT CUT-style tournament at the U of M on 11/11. Pat Hope with another solid tournament takes the win and the scoring title. I don't think the stats are online yet.
Questions? Comments? Concerns?
I'm always interested to hear what other people think of tournaments I played.

Andrew--You should be glad I didn't contribute a packet on classical music. Your brain will hurt. I do think the physics packet is well written. You don't have to be a physics major to answer questions. And it is not afraid to ask "history of science" questions. I never understand how the...

This Tournament Goes to Eleven - 9/21 and 9/22
Hey all, I'm Andrew Hart from the U of Minn. Well this was my first endeavor in college quiz bowl. Anyone have any thoughts on TTgt11? For those unaware, it's a tournament run with eight-person teams, split up into two rooms, each with a different theme packet. The tournament is a little more trashy...
