and another thing! those smug people at TRASH don't even ask for feedback! ACF editors answer every little question, complaint and rant (Seth Teitler sure has a lot of patience). NAQT solicits feedback. Did anyone from TRASH post asking people what they think? No. So self satisfied. They could care ...

double standard?
hey, I just wanted to point out something.. So I was looking at stats from the Northwest ACF/TRASH combo... Interesting how the top team at ACF there puts up 354 points a game or whatever, (with close to 17 ppb), while the top TRASH team puts up only 208 points a game with 14 ppb or so. So seriously...

feedback idea
Just the burgeoning social scientist in me coming out but, There are a lot of statements that people make about whats true of quizbowl players in general, whats true of certain factions etc. etc. Frankly, anecdotal evidence blows. The whole bloody lot of it. How can you evaulate the claims of someon...

Great dialogue. I really think we're onto something good here. Something else just occurred to me. For players who in general score a lot of points, it somehow doesn't make sense to compare them to someone who scores very few. For example, the fact that Lafer drops 19 ppg from 62.. is that a meaning...

personal stats data analysis
Hey all, I was having a conversation with Andrew about personal stats, which led to the following idea. PPG, as as been discussed ad naseum, is a poor way to measure contribution to team, or ability. (People racking up stats against shitty teams, etc etc.) The PATh stat is interesting in that it tri...

packet submissions, packet swap
I figured everyone else had a screed, so I should join in the fun. This post is mostly directed at people who actually write questions. Ok, seriously, what the fuck is up with packet swaps? I don't want to call tournament editors out by name, but these days packet swaps are the norm. And those of us...

Best writers in the game ...
I was wondering ... who are the best question writers in the game? I think the criteria should be 1) interesting questions, 2) well-researched questions (with original, non-hackneyed clues), 3) well-written questions (sentences that make sense, etc.). Then I decided that there could be even more int...

power exclamation!
After consulting with the many great players who put up power marks like its their job, I have decided to compile a list of the most common exclamations upon receiving that equivalent of a hit of quizbowl crack. Please feel free to add your own options.

Top CBI players?
Ignored in all this discussion are the best of the best, CBI Champions and defenders of the galaxy. I beat my cousin in Tiddlywinks in my basement and now I live to tell the tale. So you tell me yours.
Who is your top 20? Maybe I'll post mine when I'm done taking a shit.

There are too many robots in quizbowl.
Think about it. The top 20 players of all time. How many are real people, and how many are robots?
Micha Eisner? Robot.
Seth Teitler? Robot.
Jeff Hoppes? Gigolo, but his best friends are robots.
Discuss.

Science history
A few related random thoughts,, While if pressed, I'd probably agree that there isn't some kind of in principle rationale for wanting less history of science (one that doesn't extend to other categories, like philosophy, for example), I don't think that much matters. Point is, science players (and I...

ACF Nationals directions and last minute call for teams
Hey everyone, There was a dropped team today, which brought our count to an awkward number. We would love if 1, possibly 2 more teams could add even at this late date. Also, if you are registered and for some reason need to drop, please let us know as soon as possible. Again that email is pmlitvak a...

ACF Nationals Deadline Reminder, Distribution, Div 2 Eligibi
Hey all, Most people are correctly inferring the distribution as being identical to the ACF Regionals distribution. However, just to make sure its clear, I'm posting it. We are requiring 1/1 less for the nationals packet, so the distriution is very slightly altered: Literature 5/5 History 5/5 Scienc...

Still More ACF Nationals Information
Hi everyone, First of all, a sample packet is up at the ACF website 9http://www.dpo.uab.edu/~paik/acf/ ). Essentially, the formatting should follow that packet exactly, with two relevant differences. First ,we are asking teams to submit 25 tossups and 25 bonuses (instead of the 30/30 that the ACF wr...

Hey all- Ezequiel wanted me to cross-post this tournament announcement (for the weird people that only read this group) -Paul Hi everyone, I just wanted to announce a pre-Nationals academic tournament (some might even call it a warm up) that will take place either at the University of Michigan or at...

This is an informal poll, but at least you should get the teams right... (I don't think any of this is a secret, but if it is, then I'll get angry calls from them soon) Last I heard, on NAQT, chicago will have Andrew, and on ACF, they will have Subash. Also, Ezequiel may be playing ACF Nats for Mich...

The Transition from High School to College
Something has been bothering me of late. As I peruse the high school quizbowl section, I notice a great deal of bragging ("We are the 3rd best team in the country", "I am the best player east of the mississippi, north of the allegheny river", "I am the best player sitting on...
