Prison Bowl League (Online, Northeast, October to ~December)

Post by rachelyang »

Greetings to all Northeast-area teams! The Hunter Quiz Bowl team is pleased to announce that we will be running a league-style mirror of Prison Bowl XIII, starting the week of October 11th and running for the following 2 to 3 months (exact length of the league will be determined by the number of teams), to be held over Zoom.

Eligibility
The tournament will be open to all teams from the Northeast as categorized by the U.S. Census Bureau (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania), as well as any teams which were registered for Prison Bowl Mainsite (3/28/20) prior to its cancellation due to the pandemic (this includes Miami Valley, Richard Montgomery, and Stevenson).

Edit (10/2): International players active in the Northeast circuit interested in playing should reach out to [email protected].

Tournament Format
This tournament will be run in a league-style format, with teams expecting to play 1-2 games per week. Participating teams will be sent a schedule with matchups and moderators, and moderators will reach out to team captains to find times between Thursday and Sunday that would work for team members. Teams will then be sent Zoom links for their games. The exact schedule and number of weeks/packets will be dependent on the number of registered teams, but all teams will be able to play at least two months, or 8 weeks, of games.

We hope that this format will help alleviate the stress and taxing nature of full-day virtual tournaments and provide teams with an opportunity to try an exciting new format. If the Thursday-Sunday format poses an issue for any teams, please contact us at [email protected].

Tournament games will follow standard ACF rules of untimed rounds consisting of 20 tossups and 20 three-part, 30 point bonuses (without bouncebacks). Ties will be broken by tiebreaker tossups. 15 point powers and -5 negs before the end of the tossup apply, but no double negs. Timing will be 7 seconds after buzzing, after a bonus part is read, and after a tossup has been read.

Because some team members may not be available every week, players will be permitted to switch between their schools’ teams during different weeks if necessary. However, no player who starts on a higher team than another player from the same school may later play on a lower team than them (i.e. if player A is on Hunter A and player B is on Hunter B during the first week, player A may play for Hunter B the second week, but not if player B is simultaneously playing for Hunter A). This rule is instituted so that teams do not switch all their best players to lower teams for strategic reasons.

Registration
To register for this tournament, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/i1Ch4ZrMsm9Wwyj49. There will be an initial soft field cap of 24 teams, but this will expand if there is sufficient interest.

Payment
$60 for the first team from a school
$50 for each subsequent team

We are unable to offer moderator discounts for this tournament, and so we have reduced our registration fees. If this lack of discounts impacts your ability to play this tournament, please reach out to us and we will figure something out.

Cheating Policy
The abhorrent act of cheating is absolutely prohibited at this tournament. Any player who has been discovered cheating will be removed from the tournament and reported to their school’s coaches/administration for further consequences. To guard against cheating in-game, we will be instituting a rule that all players must have their videos on during Zooms unless arrangements are made ahead of time. Because games will not be played at the same time, we will be relying on the honor code for players not to reveal any set content to players on other teams before rounds are finished.

Please reach out to tournament director Rachel Yang at [email protected] with any questions or concerns!
