Maryland Fall High School Tournament, 9/24

Post by Nine-Tenths Ideas »

This is the announcement for the Maryland Fall High School tournament. It will be held on September 24th. More details as to the exact location of the tournament will be posted as it approaches; for now, I think it will be held in Jimenez Hall. This tournament will use NAQT IS-107. If you would like to register a team, please email me at [email protected] [this is not my email address-- remove the NOSPAM in the middle].

The price structure is as follows:
Base team fee: $60
Additional teams from the same school: -$10
Buzzer system: -$5/system (this only counts if it actually works, so please try and make sure it works)
Dedicated staffer/moderator: -$5
Minimum fee per team: $45

This space reserved for field updates:
Caesar Rodney [1 team, 1 buzzer, 1 moderator]
St. Joseph's [2 teams, 1 buzzer, 1 moderator]
St. Anselm's [1 team, 1 buzzer]
Centennial [4 teams, 2 buzzers]
GDS [2 teams, 3-4 buzzers]
Whitman [1 team, 1 buzzer]
Longfellow [1 team, 1 buzzer]
Richard Montgomery [2 teams, 1 buzzer]
Gonzaga [1 team]
Blair [1 team, 1 buzzer]
The Wallace School for Pseudonyms [1 team, 1 buzzer]

Just to make it clear, we'll be there with what is going to amount to mostly a B Team.

We haven't figured out our full A Team anyway, but our best two (or at least, best two of three) players can't make it. I just hope we'll have more wins than last year when basically this exact thing happened at this tournament before.

Whitman will be there with one team. (for bracketing purposes, three members of our usual "A team" will be missing due to an It's ac taping).

Unfortunately, this is the day of our homecoming and most of my students have related obligations and/or desires. I'm still trying to put together a ragtag group, but I'm doubtful it'll succeed. Regardless, I hope your tournament goes well, Isaac.

It's more than a week away, but do we have any idea about the starting and ending times of this tournament? And can Jiminez Hall be confirmed yet?

We're looking forward to going, especially a few members of my team who are competing for a final spot on the "real" A Team coming up. Looks like we've got some awesome schools coming that will help them prepare for what real quizbowl is like in the Mid-Atlantic, instead of the JV brackets and ill-prepared non-Charter Delaware teams they're used to. It'll be a day to learn.

A 16-team field. At least we're consistent from last year.

Are we planning on another 4-team bracket thing? I'd be pretty surprised to see my team break 15ppb in any game during the day, so just keep that in mind while seeding.

It is a group of students who attend TJ. An attempt to grab some Blake players as a last-ditch 18th team was unsuccessful.

Needless to say, we would love to find an additional team for this event, and will almost certainly be forming a scab team and running an 18-team schedule should that fail. Any coaches with extra players are encouraged to bring them along for this purpose (or even better, register one more team!), but we'll work with what's available.

Thanks to the awesome folks at UMD for hosting a perfect tournament, as always. NAQT should be commended for this set, a nearly flawless array of questions as pyramidal quizbowl questions asymptotically approach perfection. Thanks to St. Joe's for the epic and intense 18 power match, and congrats to GDS for winning.

STATS NOTE: Samantha only played in 4.5 games, I played in 11, Sam in 11, Josh in 11, and Chris in 10.5, because of our rotation. This will boost our stats a little :D Thanks

Thanks Maryland for hosting this. I liked the set, and compared to a lot of NAQT packets, i really enjoyed these. Normally there are multiple "groaners" per packet but these questions were way better, with the difficulty just right and a lot of bonus questions that most teams could 10 most times. Nice job NAQT.

Hopefully our team will do a little better when we have our full lineup.

Thanks to Isaac, Chris and everyone else at Maryland for an excellent tournament. The field was terrific, and congrats to GDS for an outstanding day and a very deserving victory. Thanks also to everyone involved in that terrific 18 power match we had with Richard Montgomery that came down to the last TU, as it should have, tied at 365 each. It was a shame that anyone had to lose that marvelous & intense struggle. Congrats also to Montgomery Blair, who clearly had our number. We wish everyone a great season and hope to see most of you again some time during the year.

To clarify the placement in the top bracket (which played an additional round robin), the order was:

1st: GDS A
2nd: RM A
T-3rd: Blair, St. Joe's A
5th: Whitman
6th: The Wallace School

The very existence of the clearly talented "Wallace School" is intriguing yet mysterious. Does anyone know the story behind this effort by some players from TJ to create this competitive entity, and, further, how representative of the 2011-2012 version of the TJ team was this specific Wallacite incarnation of it? Perhaps someone from the "Wallace School" itself would care to respond? If not, can anyone else shed some light on this mystery, or is this simply a can of worms best left unopened? Not being from the region, yet playing in it when we can, this particular development engenders natural curiosity, especially when it involves such a storied quizbowl program. So, can anyone help unravel this riddle?

It was the best four players who could go that day. Johnathan just decided not to show up for some reason, and James couldn't be there either. Those two players will probably form the rest of TJ A, along with Raynor and one of the others.

Also to address Coach Powers question a little further, this incarnation of TJ A was missing its two best NAQT players, so it's not particularly representative of how they will do when they are at full-strength.

Ah, well the TJ kids (as of when i read to them at like 10 or 11am) had absolutely no idea why Jonathan wasn't there when i spoke to them. Certainly i know Jonathan is really good at (and really loves) quizbowl, so i was pretty confused as to why he wasn't there either. I look forward to moderating a game with him in it, though, sometime soon.

As a student at "The Wallace School" I would just like to point out that Saturday was our homecoming dance so many of our players, myself included, felt disinclined to attend. In addition, formal quizbowl practices haven't started for us this year so organizing a team for this tournament happened rather at the last minute and the team we sent was not fully representative of our 2011-2012 lineup.

Why did Gonzaga and Caesar Rodney play an extra game? Also, the RM A/Blair game in Round 6 has 21 tossups answered.

Lots of teams played an extra game at the end of the day.

The original plan was (for some reason) to offer 3 extra games to all the teams, as the top 4 playoff teams were going to do a round-robin of that many games of course. Nobody wanted to do that though, so teams were just paired up for one more game since the tournament was finished at like 3:45. There were at least 2 other kinda-scrimmage games like that played (i don't remember between which teams), but yeah, Gonzaga and CR played because they hadn't yet, and because we thought it might be a good game - the "best" bottom bracket and the "worst" middle bracket. Turns out it really wasn't a good game much at all, but it happened anyway. Since i was the scorekeeper for it, i took the stats back downstairs and i guess somebody entered them. I suppose the other games either didn't keep official stats or just never reported them.

Isaac has just informed me for sure that Maryland doesn't have our buzzers. Did anyone happen to take them by mistake? They're in a big black case that is labeled with pieces of yellow tape reading "St. Anselm's Abbey School." If we could get those back, that'd be awesome.
