MIT Fall Academic Tournament (September 21, 2013)

Post by t-bar » Mon Aug 12, 2013 11:39 pm

MIT will host the second annual MIT Fall Academic Tournament on Saturday, September 21, 2013.

REGISTRATION
This tournament is open to teams from all geographic areas and levels of experience. Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please register as soon as possible. The maximum number of teams is 24, and will likely stay at that number. For our convenience and your benefit, we request that you register as soon as you can. The registration form and instructions are available at http://quizbowl.mit.edu/mitfall.

LOGISTICS
The tournament will be held on the MIT campus, so this is a great opportunity to bring your students to visit the campuses of MIT, Harvard, and other universities as well as to experience the wonderful city of Boston. Check-in on the morning of the tournament will run from 8:30 to 9:00 AM in room 6-120, which is located on the first floor of MIT’s Building 6. Games will start as soon as possible after everyone has arrived, and will take place in the nearby Building 4. If everything goes smoothly, we anticipate being done by roughly 5:00 PM.

QUESTIONS
We will be using the JAMES question set, written by students of the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, VA and the Liberal Arts and Sciences Academy in Austin, TX. Last year, the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellent (PACE) certified this set as “Exemplary,” indicating that it was one of the best student-written sets of the past year.

We will also be seeking affiliation with PACE, so that the top finishers will qualify for PACE’s National Scholastics Championship.

RULES
The game format will have 20 tossup questions answerable by either team. If a team answers a tossup correctly, it will have an opportunity to answer an unrelated multi-part bonus question. There will be no computational math questions.

Each team may have up to six players on its roster, though only four players may play at any given time. If you intend to bring seven or more players, please register another team.

There will be a playoff format to be determined by the number of teams, but it will likely be some form of round-robin. All teams will be guaranteed to play at least 9 games, and all teams will be matched in the playoff rounds against teams of similar skill level.

FEES
The fees for this tournament are as follows:

+$75 first team from a school
+$65 each subsequent team
−$10 discount per working buzzer system
−$10 discount per scorekeeper provided
+$10 to purchase a paper copy of the questions

If you have any questions regarding the tournament, you can visit http://quizbowl.mit.edu/mitfall, or e-mail me at stepheneltinge@gmail.com. Please keep in mind that Boston has an excellent and safe subway and commuter rail system that may help you minimize travel and accommodation cost. Shortly before the tournament, we will contact registered teams with more detailed information. We look forward to a large and competitive tournament and hope to see you on September 21, 2013.

We are interested in bringing one team, however I am not sure if we will be affiliated with our school (Charter School of Wilmington) or not.

With many Massachusetts schools starting up this week, the field is filling fast--I've gotten seven eleven! registrations in the past 24 hours, and our field is now more than 3/4 full. If you want to come, get your registration in soon!

Two updates:

First, we have 23 teams registered for sure and one team with a registration pending. Until the latter team's registration is resolved, I will be temporarily closing the field to new registrations. Any teams wishing to register should still send in the registration form with their information; they will be placed on a waitlist in the order in which registrations are received.

Second, we have received Platinum certification from PACE! This means that the top 25% of the finishers at our tournament (the top 6 if we stay at 24 teams registered) will qualify for the National Scholastics Championship.

We have 24 officially registered teams, so the tournament is now full. Teams that still wish to register should send in the registration form with their information. They will be placed on a waitlist in the order in which registrations are received, to be added to the tournament if teams drop or if we have sufficient staff and space to expand the tournament.

I'm pleased to announce that we've secured enough staff to expand the field to 30 teams! The first six teams on the waitlist have been moved into the field.

Thanks to all on the MIT Quizbowl team for running a very efficient tournament. My kids had a great time, loved the JAMES Set, and, of course, we hope to return next year.
