CSI VIII (11/16/2013) @ Cave Spring HS (Roanoke, VA)

Post by kamikaze » Wed Sep 04, 2013 3:20 pm

I am happy to announce our 8th annual Cave Spring Invitational (CSI) will take place at Cave Spring High School in scenic southwest Virginia. We've scheduled our tournament for November 16, 2013.

AFFILIATION: We are trying to get PACE-certified again this year.

QUESTIONS: We are mirroring the IMSANITY 4 housewrite. The distribution of their set is as follows: 4.0 Literature, 4.0 History, 3.5 Science, 1.5 Math, 2.5 RMP, 2.5 Art, 1.0 Social Sciences/Geography and 1.0 Trash.

FORMAT: Our field cap is around 18 but we reserve the right to expand the field should we find enough moderators. We're trying to guarantee at least eight rounds of competition but depending on the field and what the majority of teams want, we can try to accommodate by doing more rounds. Trophies will be given to the top three teams and we usually award the top ten individuals with some sort of prize. Neg King/Queen award is also available. We also have other contests going on throughout the day that kids can participate in and win prizes.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:
-The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $70 for the first team registered from the school and $30 for each subsequent team from the same school. There is no limit to the number of teams who can attend from one school.
Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work)-no limit to # of systems you can bring
Early registration: $5 off if you commit a month before the tournament date (October 16)
Travel discount: $15 off school's total fee if you have to travel more than 150 miles as determined by MapQuest.
New team discount: Teams that have never been to the CSI or NCIS may receive a 50% discount on their first team registered (any additional teams from that school have to be brought in at full price).
Minimum fee: $35

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players.

FOOD: As always, we will provide a simple breakfast, free of charge. We have been providing a simple lunch consisting of pizza, fruit, chips and a drink for lunch at a reasonable price.

HOTEL: We are trying to get discounts to nearby accomodations for schools who may want to spend the night. If you need more information, please feel free to contact me about suitable lodging.

COACHES CHALLENGE: The Coaches Challenge is also back! Any coach/chaperone/reader not affiliated with Cave Spring HS is eligible to play. Top winners will receive trophies AND gift certificates to some wonderful national chain store. The format will be similar to last year, where all contestants do a 20-25 question worksheet at the time of registration. The highest qualifying scores will compete in a short buzzer match after lunch and before playoff announcements.

If you have any questions or wish to register, feel free to contact Bob Powers at csquizbowl <at> gmail <dot> com. We look forward to seeing you all here and hope for some good weather that weekend. Please make a note that this is a different e-mail address I've used in years past. Yahoo! mail has just gotten to be a pain and was very unsecure so please update this for your records if you haven't already.

Well, Honaker, Christiansburg and Blacksburg A ended up in a circle of death in the playoffs. All the coaches agreed to break the circle based on PPG average in playoffs so as a result, Honaker were the champions this year with Christiansburg in second and Blacksburg A in 3rd. I believe Bassett and Blacksburg B also qualify for PACE Nationals being in the top 25%.

Matt Beeken from Blacksburg was our Coaches Challenge winner this year with a commanding performance on the worksheet round. Matt's had several appearances in the playoff round but never a winner. Well, no longer this year and I hope he enjoys his gift certificate to Kabuki. Mark McGrath of Rockbridge County came in 2nd with Alex from Honaker was third.

Jillian from Hidden Valley B won our Student Challenge side event we offered getting 29 out of a possible 50 correct.

Stats will be posted later. I urge those who attended this tournament to not discuss the questions and/or answers until the last mirror of the IMSANITY packet is done. Great tournament and performances by all and I want to thank you all for coming out.
