The 2019 Scottie (September 21, 2019)

Post by Scottietodd »

Hello everyone!

I am pleased to announce the 2019 Scottie, to be held on Saturday, September 21, 2019. We are planning on hosting future Scotties on the 3rd Saturday in September to avoid the SAT, Labor Day, and ACT weekends. The Scottie will be held at Glasgow High School, 1601 Columbia Avenue, Glasgow, Kentucky.

The Scottie is a house-write by current and former players and staff for Glasgow High School. Lead writers and editors include:
Coach Todd Garrison(head coach - Literature/History/General)
Tyler Reid (University of Kentucky Quiz Bowl and GHS teacher-Arts/Lit/Social Science)
Olivia Kiser (University of Chicago Quiz Bowl - Literature/History/General).

Additional writers feature:
Garrison Page (current President of University of Kentucky quizbowl - Literature/Science)
Anish Patel (University of Kentucky - History/Science)
Rajeev Nair (University of Louisville - History/Music)
Mason Reid (Rose-Hulman - Science/RMP)
Limited writing by other former and current players.

The Scottie will include 32 teams using the card-system in the morning rounds to seed teams into playoff brackets in the afternoon. Teams will be guaranteed 10 rounds of power matched play, meaning as the day goes on, teams will play teams that have fared similarly. Prizes will be award for the top 4 teams, the top small school, and the top 10 individual performances from the morning rounds.

Each round will consist of 20 tossups with three-part bonuses that may bounce-back (TBD).
There will be both powers and negs.

The question distribution will include the following:
History 4/4 - American, Anglo, Euro, World
Literature 4/4 - American, British, Euro, World
Science 4/4 - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Other (Astronomy, Earth, non-comp Math)
Art 3/3 - Visual, Auditory, Other (Musicals, film, architecture, dance)
Religion 1/1
Mythology 1/1
Thought 1/1 Philosophy, Social Science
Geography/Current Event 1/1
Pop Culture/Trash 1/1

The Scottie will continue it's tradition of having a high quality hospitality room for coaches/sponsors/drivers at lunch. We will most likely bring back the taco bar! We will also continue our tradition of free water bottles throughout the tournament and free soft drinks at lunch; however, due to a variety of logistical reasons, we will not be offering on site lunch options. We will offer several recommendations as to how to have lunch delivered to your teams at GHS so that coaches may remain and enjoy the hospitality room. Since you will not have to deal with drinks, this should not be too difficult.

The fee for each team will be $70. Discounts of $5 per working buzzer system (per team) and for travel of over 200 miles one-way ($15) will be applied, meaning the minimum fee for each team will be $50. Schools will be limited to 2 teams until August 31, 2019, after which we will accept additional teams if the field isn't full.

Teams may register at the link below. The link has been left EDITABLE, so you may go ahead and register with only your head coach/sponsor information and then come back later and enter your roster, etc... After August 1, I will begin following up with registered teams as to next steps.
