INTRODUCING THE ISLAND CUP!
I am thrilled to announce that the Long Island Quiz Bowl Alliance will be hosting the inaugural Island Cup on October 19, 2019, February 1, 2020, and May 9, 2020, from 8:30 AM to about 6:30 PM. It is a three-tournament series, and you can register for any or all of them.
LOCATION:
The Island Cup will be hosted by Great Hollow Middle School, located at 150 Southern Boulevard in Nesconset, New York, about five minutes north of exit 58 on the LIE. Further directions will be sent upon registration.
Our May 9 event is now a Discord tournament. Details will be sent upon registration.
QUESTIONS/FORMAT:
The Island Cup will be using NAQT Question Sets IS-187A, IS-191A, and The Butterscot (NEW!), in October, February, and May, respectively. The first two sets are High School novice sets; the third is regular difficulty. There will be no computational math tossups; there will, however, be computational math bonuses. The tournament will be untimed in standard 20/20 format following NAQT rules. Teams will be seeded into preliminary brackets and re-seeded for playoffs. Teams will be offered a minimum of 10 games; teams will be expected to play all 10 rounds, even if you are not in contention for the championship. Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams, with book prizes being awarded to the top 5 and a trophy to the top individual.
Our May tournament may differ in format. We will keep you appraised of all changes.
FEES:
Please be aware that all fees are on a per-tournament basis.
-- $75 per first team
-- $65 per additional team, up to four
-- (-$5) per fully functional, non-wireless buzzer set, limit four
-- (-$10) per moderator, no limit
-- $15 for a set of questions, one per school (if desired)
There is a minimum fee of $40 per team.
All teams should pay prior to the tournament. We can process cash, checks, and purchase orders. We are happy to provide a W-9 and/or invoice on request. We cannot process credit cards under any circumstance. Please write checks to "The Long Island Quiz Bowl Alliance". You can mail checks, POs, and any other paperwork to P.O. ISLAND CUP:
All teams, regardless of location, are eligible for the Island Cup, which will be presented at the close of the three tournaments to the team with the most wins overall. There will also be a prize for the top Long Island team, defined strictly as Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and the top individual overall. Current standings will be sent after each tournament and posted here.
The Island Cup is the highest Quiz Bowl honor bestowed upon a Long Island team, similar in stature to, but unaffiliated with, the former Tri-State Trophy of MSG Varsity's The Challenge (R).
Our May event WILL count towards the Island Cup standings!
TEAMS:
There are a maximum of six players per team, four of whom may play at once. If you wish to bring more players than that, please sign up additional teams. There are no exceptions to this rule. Teams may play short, with one player at a minimum. Nobody may switch teams during the tournament, such as from "A" to "B" or otherwise.
The field is capped at 36 teams per tournament. You will be placed onto a waitlist if you miss the cutoff and will enter the field as teams drop or the field expands.
We are happy to allow pseudonymous teams and teams not directly sponsored by their school or district to register. However, we do have certain requirements for these teams, so please contact us via email or phone prior to registration and we will be happy to work with you.
It is not mandatory for a coach, parent, or adult to attend with their team.
STATS:
Full and complete team and individual stats will be posted within 48 hours after the completion of the tournament.
FOOD:
We cannot provide breakfast or lunch at this time, but we will provide you with a map and list of eateries in the Nesconset area.
Please let us know if you have any further questions!
