The Academic Team at SCGSSM invites schools to participate in the Carlanna Hendrick Academic Tournament (CHAT) on Saturday, September 21 in Hartsville, SC. The tourney is named in honor of our beloved history teacher, Dr. Carlanna Hendrick, who admirably served SCGSSM during its first 31 years.

We will be using the NAQT question set IS-185A. Each participating team will be guaranteed at least 7 games and our goal is to provide 8-10 games for each team. While the exact tournament format will depend on the number of participating teams, the tournament will begin with five preliminary rounds in the morning. After the lunch break, teams will be bracketed based on their performance and compete in either a round-robin or a consolation tournament against teams with similar records. The winner of the top afternoon bracket will be declared the tournament champion.

Tournament Rules:
• Tossups with bonuses (16 in the morning, 20 in the afternoon)
• Powers (15 points) and Negs (-5 points)
• No bounce-back possibility on bonuses

Fee Structure:
• $60 base fee for each team
• $10 discount for each fully functional buzzer system
• $20 discount for each experienced moderator
• $30 maximum discount per team

Team & Roster Size:
Every team competes with a maximum of six players on its roster, with up to 4 students playing at one time. Teams are allowed to play shorthanded with fewer than four students. There is a half-time substitution opportunity in each game. No student may compete for two different teams. In other words, switching from one team’s roster to a second team’s roster is not permitted.

Dining Options:
A light breakfast will be provided at check-in featuring muffins, scones, fresh fruit, and yogurt parfaits along with coffee, juice, and water. Participants may purchase a buffet-style lunch in our dining hall or may visit one of several fast food restaurants nearby.

Awards:
We will award trophies to the first and second place teams overall. We will also give trophies to the top JV team (no players older than 10th grade) and the top Small School (best team among schools eligible for the SSNCT).

Registration:
Beginning August 1, tournament registration can be made through the NAQT registration system https://www.naqt.com/registration/regis ... t_id=10615.
The deadline for registration is September 14. Payment should be made the day of the tournament by either cash or a check made out to SCGSSM. Morning check-in will be from 8:00 to 8:30 with a brief welcome meeting at 8:45 with plans for the first round to start at 9:00. We look forward to welcoming you to our campus.

Thank you to all the teams that came out today for the Carlanna Hendrick Academic Tournament. It was an extremely competitive tournament with many quality teams and schools. Our overall champion was TJ Classical A who won the afternoon championship round-robin with a record of 4-1 and finished with an overall record of 8-2. Spring Valley A earned second place with an afternoon record of 3-2 and an overall record of 8-2. Dutch Fork A and Southside A tied for third place with identical 3-2 and 7-3 records. Congratulations is also extended to our top Junior Varsity team, Porter-Gaud C. It was a fantastic way to start off the competition season!
