Mellon Bowl XVII, Pittsburgh (10/26/19)

Post by Pallas's cat »

Carnegie Mellon Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce that we will host Mellon Bowl XVII on our Pittsburgh campus on Saturday, October 26, 2019. The field is capped at 24 teams with the potential to expand depending on staff.

Questions: SCOP 10 (previous years' examples can be seen here)

We encourage players and schools newer to quizbowl to play this tournament, or those back after a long hiatus. This is a great opportunity for established quizbowl schools to introduce new or less experienced players to quizbowl.

Registration:
To register, please fill out this form or email us at [email protected] with with your school name and the number of teams, buzzers, and moderators you plan to bring. Registration will close on Saturday, October 19, a week before the tournament.

Fees and Discounts:
$75 for first team
$65 per additional team
-$10 per fully functional buzzer system (at least eight working buzzers)
-$15 per experienced moderator
-$20 per team for schools new to quiz bowl this year (or schools that did not attend any tournaments in the 2018-19 academic year; IU competitions do not count against this)

The minimum fee per team is $40.

Payment: We expect payment (cash or checks made out to “Carnegie Mellon University”) on the morning of the tournament. Please email if you need to make other arrangements.

Schedule:
Teams should aim to arrive by 8:30 am, after which we will have an opening meeting followed by morning gameplay. The exact number of rounds and playoff/finals format will be determined by the field size. As the tournament approaches, more detailed logistical information will be provided to registered teams.

Format:
We will use a standard game format with powers and negs. Rounds will be untimed, but we will keep the tournament moving at a fast and consistent pace.

Nationals Qualification:
There will be no nationals qualification at this tournament. We encourage teams aiming to qualify for nationals to attend Pitt's SAGACITY tournament on November 16.

IMPORTANT: We take safety at this tournament extremely seriously, and involved staffers at this tournament have been background-cleared at the state and federal level. Under PA Act 153 regulations, all students participating in this tournament MUST present a signed waiver from CMU's Child Protection Services in order to play. We will email a PDF of this waiver to each team upon registration. If students are under 18 years of age, a parent must cosign.

Feel free to post in this thread or reach out to us at [email protected] with any questions you may have. We hope to see you soon!
