Post by » Tue Aug 27, 2019 2:25 pm

Friends Select School and Carver Engineering and Science cordially invite you to the Philly Fall Invitational on Saturday November 9th 2019 held at Friends Select School. Friends Select School is located at 1651 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia PA 19103. We are right in the heart of Center City across the street from Suburban Station for teams taking the train.

We plan to have a cap of 32 teams for open and novice teams. To qualify for novice, teams cannot have a PPG higher than 25.

To register, fill out this form:

The tournament will use NAQT’s IS-187 A set.

The top 15% of the open division will qualify for NAQT’s all-school National Championship Tournaments (HSNCT). Additionally, the top 30% of small-school eligible teams will qualify for NAQT’s Small School National Championship Tournament (SSNCT). More info on those tournaments, including NAQT's definition of "small school," is available on NAQT’s website.

Teams will be grouped into initial brackets of six and play a round robin within their bracket. After lunch, we will re-bracket teams for afternoon rounds. During afternoon rounds, teams will be placed against other teams with similar records. Assuming a full field, all teams will play at least ten games.

Payment can be made to Friends Select School (put "QuizBowl" in the memo). Our address is 1651 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia PA 19103. You may also bring cash or check to the tournament site.

Registration will be from 8:00 A.M. until 8:30 A.M., followed by a brief meeting for coaches and players. We expect to begin play promptly at 9:00 A.M.

First Team: $60
Each Additional Team: $50
Buzzer Set Discount: -$5 per buzzer system.
Moderator Discount: -$15 for a competent moderator
Travel Discount: -$10 for teams traveling over 100 miles one way (our zip code is 19103).
New Team Discount: -$10

If your program has not played a pyramidal tossup-bonus quiz bowl tournament in the last three years, your team(s) will automatically qualify for the new team discount. Please ask if you have questions regarding this discount.

For lunch, there are numerous options around the school. You will be provided with a list of these and a map at registration

As of 10/14/19, the field sits at:

School (Novice/Open/Buzzers/Moderators)
Archbishop Ryan (0/1/0/0)
Bodine (1/1/1/0)
Church Farm School (1/0/0/0)
Dauphin County Technical School (1/0/1/0)
Germantown Friends School (0/1/1/0)
Great Valley (0/4/4/0)
Henderson (1/3/2/1)
Lancaster Mennonite (0/1/2/0)
Manheim Township (0/3/0/0)
MaST Community Charter School (0/1/0/0)
Middlesex County Academy (Edison) (2/1/3/0)
Moravian Academy (1/2/1/1)
Penn Manor (0/1/4/0)
Wilmington Charter (0/2/1/0)
Wissahickon (1/1/3/0)
TOTALS: (8/22/23/3)

I believe the plan is to cap at 12 novice and 24 open, which was the breakdown last year. I will double check with Ian to confirm since we cohost and he obviously knows the space limitations at his school better than I.
