Scarlet Knight Novice - March 7, 2020

Post by adrthumbtack »

Hey everyone!

I am pleased to announce that Rutgers University will be hosting Scarlet Knight Novice on 3/7/20. The tournament will use RAMS 2, courtesy of Miami Valley.

Eligibility: This is a novice tournament, so we will only allow teams of first-year quizbowl players. This means that you have no experience in quizbowl besides this current year. Experience in other academic competition formats, such as academic decathlon or modified Jeopardy, are fine, as long as you do not have significant experience with quizbowl as well. If you're not sure whether your team may participate or feel that your team should be able to participate, please email us at the email below.

Field Size: There will be a soft field cap of 24 teams, which will increase with registrations and number of buzzers/staffers. Teams will be limited to rosters of six players.

Registration and Fees:
Base fee: $55 for your first team, $45 for any subsequent teams
Buzzer discount: -$5
Staffer discount: -$10
The minimum fee per team is $25

Please fill out this form to register.

Feel free to email us at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Payment: All teams must pay by the day of the tournament. Teams that do not will be charged a $25 penalty fee. We will accept either cash or checks; no other form of payment will be accepted. All checks must be made out to “Rutgers University Academic Team”. If your school requires an invoice for payment, please get in touch with us at the email address above.

Location: The tournament will be held in Scott Hall (43 College Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ) on the College Avenue Campus of Rutgers-New Brunswick.

Transportation and Parking: Teams driving to the tournament who wish to park on campus must purchase a $5 parking permit (permits can only be purchased online on weekdays from 8am to 5pm) and use the parking deck at 622 George Street, New Brunswick, NJ. Alternatively, teams can park in these off-campus facilities provided by the City of New Brunswick for a slightly higher fee. Scott Hall is also within walking distance of the New Brunswick train station on NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor Line.

Schedule: Registration will begin in Scott Hall at 8am and all teams should arrive at 8:30am at the latest. There will be opening announcements at 8:45am, and we hope to begin Round 1 as close to 9am as possible. The exact format will be determined by the final field size, but in any case, teams will be placed in preliminary brackets for morning rounds and then reseeded into playoff and consolation brackets in the afternoon. All teams will be guaranteed at least ten rounds in total.

Food: While we will not be providing breakfast or lunch, there are all sorts of options for food within a few minutes’ walking distance.

Hope to see everyone in March!

Due to scheduling conflicts with Rutgers buildings, the date of the tournament will have to be moved to March 7, 2020. I apologize for the inconvenience.

We are hoping to have 8 teams by Wednesday, February 19. If not, then we will have to cancel the tournament.
