University of South Carolina Fall Tournament (November 16th)

The Academic Team at the University of South Carolina is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the 2019 USC Fall Tournament on November 16th. I will be the tournament director. Further details are below. I will be in contact with all teams prior to the tournament and am happy to answer any questions regarding this event. Note: we are currently capping the field at 24 teams. Once it gets to that number, we will begin a waiting list.

We will be using NAQT questions (IS 189A).

How to Register

E-mail me at [email protected] with the following information:

1. How many teams you wish to register.
2. How many buzzer systems you can bring.
3. How many staffers you plan to bring.

I will respond to your registrations to send you confirmation of your registration.

Location:

The tournament will be held in the Gambrell Hall at the University of South Carolina. Registration will go from 8:00 to 8:45, we will have an introductory meeting, and play will begin at 9 AM. NOTE: This is a change from the original location, the Darla Moore School of Business. Gambrell Hall is about a 5 minute walk from most parking.

Parking-wise, there are a large number of metered parking spaces within an easy walking distance from Gambrell Hall, and the meters are not checked on Saturdays. There are also permit parking spaces on the side of the road along Pendleton and Barnwell Streets, and those spaces are also not checked on Saturdays.

Food:

We will be providing limited amounts of milk, juice, and doughnuts, first come, first served prior to and during registration. We will not be providing lunch. There are a number of eateries near the Darla Moore School of Business and we will provide a list of places to eat to the teams.

Anyone staffing the tournament can eat pizza with the rest of the staff or receive a lunch voucher.

Team size and Rosters:

There can be a maximum number of 6 players on each team’s roster, with substitutions possible at half-time and between games. If you wish to bring 7 or 8 players, we ask that you register a second team, and so on for any schools with larger numbers of players.

At least 24 hours prior the tournament, it would be greatly appreciated if teams could provide a roster of players on their teams. This will greatly speed up statkeeping.

Awards:

We will award trophies to the top 3 overall teams.

While we will not also have a separate JV division, we will designate the team that includes no players older than 10th grade as JV and will award a trophy to the top overall JV team.

We will recognize the top individual scorers with book prizes.

Fees:

$50 per team base fee
-$10 discount per buzzer system
-$20 per staffer (Reader/Scorekeeper. Note: staffer cannot be a current student at the University of South Carolina)
-$10 multiple team discount (note: This means that schools that register 2 or more teams will get a single $10 discount.)
Minimum fee of $20/team

Note: We are happy to work with any school that has trouble paying the full tournament fee by the day of the tournament.

Format

Format will be determined based on number of teams. In any event, we will have an advantaged final for 1st place if the 1st place team is one game ahead of the second place team (assuming the number of packets allows for that). If there is a tie for second to play for 1st, we will have a statistical tiebreaker; head to head matchups will NOT be used to determine any tiebreakers. If there is a clear cut first place winner, we will only have statistical tiebreakers for 2nd and 3rd, and we will only have statistical tiebreakers for the JV championship.

Gameplay

We will be playing using NAQT rules. We will have 20 tossup rounds with powers, 10s, and negs. There will be no bouncebacks on bonuses. There will be no math computation questions.

Congratulations to Dorman A for winning the 2019 USC Fall Tournament. Southside A finished 2nd and the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics finished 3rd. Dorman B was our JV champion. Charlie Weaver from Dorman A (112.5 PPG), Sparsho De from Spring Valley A ((83.75 PPG), Jayden from Mauldin (77.5), Rohit Swain from Governor's School B (76.25 ppg), and Li Ward from Dutch Fork (72.5 PPG) were the top 5 scorers. I have a correction to the stats. The leading scorer in the JV division was Ethan Lehrman from Porter-Gaud C with 65 PPG. He was the 6th overall scorer and is a freshman. Congratulations to him on a very impressive performance!
