QuizDroid Open (Designate Bowl) [HS Open, PSACA]

Post by QuestionCactus »

This is an online doubles tournament scheduled for May 10th, 2020. Contact arjun [dot] panickssery [at gmail.com] for any questions.

Game Format
Teams will consist of two players. Matches will consist of multiple teams playing NHBB history-bee-style rounds consisting of 21 tossups. Teams will score points for tossups and exit the round upon reaching a predetermined number of points. The exact parameters will depend on the field size.

Most importantly, the games will be played on the quiz bowl variant called designate bowl (sometimes called two-headed monster). When a player buzzes, his/her teammate must answer within 5 seconds. Communication between teammates is not allowed; they have to guess whether their teammate knows the answer.

Eligibility
This event will be open. Teams may consist of players from different schools. The tournament is nominally restricted to high school players but requests for exceptions will be entertained liberally.

Question Set
QuizDroid Open will be run on PSACA, a novice-difficulty high school set. The editors, writing teams, and category distribution can be found at the link.

Tournament Format
The tournament will begin promptly at 11:00am EDT and consist of 8-10 preliminary rounds and then a final. There will be live stats. The winning team will receive a copy of QuizDroid (a free mobile app). The neg prize is the same.

Transportation
The Discord US-East central server is located in New York City (172.98.93.XX), though all regions have multiple data centers for redundancy. Maintain social distance.

Food
Lunch will not be provided. Regrettably, we cannot recommend "local eateries" since cyberspace lacks edible foodstuffs. We recommend players grow their own food to maintain social distance.

Registration
Register by filling out this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... A/viewform

If you would like to sign up as a free agent, you can join a list of other free agents who can then be arranged into teams. Enter you name and email address into this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... A/viewform

The entry fee for teams is $25 through Venmo/PayPal (Venmo is preferred).

Teams that drop out after 11:00am EDT on May 7th (i.e. 72 hours before the tournament) are still liable for the entire entry fee.

Register to staff by contacting me by email or on Discord. Registrants are not guaranteed the opportunity to staff. Staff will be compensated $20.

How can you ensure that players don't have a way of communicating with one another about when to buzz in?

I am not the TD, but good god if you're cheating at two-headed monster, get a life.

(This also seems like a rare case where an online tournament would actually be *easier* -- in-person you'd have to require players to tone down physical reactions to the question.)

Edit to add: This tournament is super cool and I'd like to see more unusual/casual format online events happening.

We will request that they refrain.

Regrettably, we do not possess any historical archive of Designate Bowl tournaments on which to apply Bonferroni corrections.

Congratulations to our top finishers:

4) The Two Gentlemen of Corona

3) Adventurum Optimum Clementis Grumionisque

2) Card Simp

1) The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance :trophy:

There's no software I think that accommodates four teams in a game, so it may be a day or two before I get stats for the database. They'll be up though: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/6468/stats/test/
