The Scottie Online (Discord, May 31)

Post by a Joe »

The Long Island Quizbowl Alliance is proud to announce Scottie online as a complement to the Island Cup May Online! Details follow.

DATE AND TIME:

Scottie Online will take place on May 31, 2020, from 10 AM EST to 4 or 5 PM. Online registration opens at 9:15 AM. All players and coaches should be logged onto the server by 9:45 AM.

QUESTIONS/FORMAT:

This tournament will be using the Scottie, a high school set of regular difficulty (for those unfamiliar, this is a moderate to difficult set, but by no means impossible).

Our May 9 event (details here) will be using an abbreviated version of the Scottie called the BUTTERSCOT that is appropriate for novice teams or those who do not generally play this form of Quizbowl (such as those who are used to local leagues). Schools can play both events, subject to restrictions; contact us for more details.

In order to ensure the integrity of our tournament, no bonuses will be read. As such, this will be a tossup-only event, with 20 read per round. Otherwise, the tournament will follow NAQT rules.

Teams will be seeded into preliminary brackets, followed by re-seeding for playoffs. All teams will be guaranteed 10 rounds. Teams are expected to stay and play the entire event, even if you are not in contention for the championship.

The initial field cap will be 24 teams. If we get sufficient moderators, we will up this to 30 teams.

TEAMS:

There are a maximum of 4 players per team, all of whom may play at once. No alternates or substitutions will be permitted. Teams may play short, with a minimum of one player. Nobody may switch teams during the tournament, such as from "A" to "B" or otherwise. There will be a maximum of 4 teams per school.

Without exception, all players MUST be from the same school. This is not an open mirror; no chimera teams are permitted whatsoever.

To ensure the smooth functioning of our event, rosters must be submitted at least one week in advance. Coaches are welcome to spectate, as long as we know in advance.

We are happy to allow pseudonymous teams and teams not directly sponsored by their school or district to register. However, we do have certain requirements for these teams, so please contact us via email or phone prior to registration and we will be happy to work with you.

PRIZES:

Trophies will be mailed to the top three teams as well as the top individual. We reserve the right to increase the number of trophies and prizes as the field expands at our discretion.

FEES:

There will be a flat fee of $75 per team for either division. There is a $20 discount available if you bring a moderator. Fees are due at least one week prior to the event.

Payment can be made via mailed check, PayPal, Venmo, or Wire (if you insist). Please do not mail cash. Note that PayPal, Venmo, and Wire may charge an additional fee. We can process purchase orders and we will provide W-9 forms and invoices on request.

Write all checks to "The Long Island Quiz Bowl Alliance". Mail checks to P.O. Box 205, Nesconset, NY 11767.

REGISTRATION:

In order to register, follow one of these options:

-- Fill out THIS GOOGLE FORM
-- Email us at [email protected] or post in this thread with the following:
---- Number of teams
---- The name of your school, and pseudonym if applicable
---- An email address where we can reach you
-- We can also take registrations by phone; I cannot post the phone number here, but reach out and I will call you.

Once you receive a confirmation from us, you are officially registered.

Please ensure you register prior to the day of the tournament. The drop deadline is one week prior to the event, after which you will be responsible for the full amount due.

STATS:

Full and complete team and individual stats will be posted within 48 hours after the completion of the tournament.

MODERATORS:

We can use as many staffers as we can get for this event: moderators, scorekeepers, and more. All staffers will be paid $20.

If you have any further questions, please let us know!

NOTE:

This tournament will be following The Long Island Protocols for Handling Accusations of Cheating.

This tournament was today!

Arcadia took the championship, followed by the Norfolk Academic Guild, Hotchkiss, and Barrington (Illinois). DCD, Davis A, Norman North, South Burlington, Russellville, Ithaca, Lusher, and Trinity Prep rounded out the playoffs.

Amogh Kulkarni from Arcadia took home the scoring prize with 110 PPG!

I want to commend the incredible individual performances we saw at the event: excluding finals, we had 4 players over 100 PPG, 10 over 75 PPG, and 18 players (of 101) over 50 PPG! These were Amogh, Ean Casey from Norfolk Ac. Guild, Shawn Cafferty-Lueck from Russellville, Eli Issokson from Lusher, Cooper Roh from Hotchkiss, Ben Skinner from Davis, Will McCurley from Baker, Justin Zhang from Newport, Rohit Lai from Ithaca, Charles Young from Barrington IL, Zach Rosman from Irvington, Enzo Cunanan from Trinity, Douglas Meeker from Barrington RI, Maia Walzer from Bergen, Matthew Vigneau from South Burlington, Cindy Gao from Belmont, Arthur Gayden from DCD, and Lily Egol from Ranney.

A special shout-out to Russellville, who had an excellent performance in their first-ever Saturday event!

I'd also like to thank our impeccable staff! As always, we couldn't have done it without you.

Stats will be up around Tuesday or so! Stay tuned!
