The Midsummer Classic (HS Novice, Discord, June 20)

Post by Snoopy »

The Long Island Quiz Bowl Alliance is proud to announce the sixth and final (at least we think so; you never know with us) tournament of our 2020 Online Tournament Series: the official Discord mirror of RAMS II, also known as the Midsummer Classic! Details follow.

DATE AND TIME:

The Midsummer Classic will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2020, from 10 AM EST to 4 or 5 PM. Online registration opens at 9:15 AM. All players and coaches should be logged onto the server by 9:45 AM.

QUESTIONS/FORMAT:

The event will be using Miami Valley RAMS II, a High School set of novice difficulty. No bonuses will be read; this will be a tossup-only event. The tournament will follow NAQT rules.

Teams will be seeded into preliminary brackets, followed by re-seeding for playoffs. All teams will be guaranteed 10 rounds. Teams are expected to stay and play the entire event, even if you are not in contention for the championship.

The initial field cap will be 24 teams. If we get sufficient moderators, we will up this to 36 teams.

TEAMS:

There are a maximum of 4 players per team, all of whom may play at once. No alternates or substitutions will be permitted. Teams may play short, with a minimum of one player. Nobody may switch teams during the tournament, such as from "A" to "B" or otherwise. There will be a maximum of 4 teams per school.

Without exception, all players MUST be from the same school. This is not an open mirror; no chimera teams are permitted whatsoever.

The tournament will have restricted eligibility. You can play this tournament under the following conditions:
- You were eligible to play at the High School level in general last season, and one of the following:
- If you are a high school Freshman or Sophomore, you must not have attended the NSC or HSNCT
- If you are a high school Junior or Senior, you must not have attended the NSC or HSNCT, and you cannot have scored over 50 PPG at a high school event
- If you are in Middle School, you are free to play this event; however, you should exercise discretion about whether you are too good to play this event
- If you were in the eighth grade this previous season, you can play with your High School team if you'd like to

All attendance is subject to TD discretion. If you otherwise meet the guidelines but did very well at a tournament, particularly for Middle School players, we reserve the right to decline your registration or ask for a roster change.

To ensure the smooth functioning of our event, rosters must be submitted at least one week in advance, and they will be checked for eligibility. Coaches are welcome to spectate, as long as we know in advance.

We are happy to allow pseudonymous teams and teams not directly sponsored by their school or district to register. However, we do have certain requirements for these teams, so please contact us via email or phone prior to registration and we will be happy to work with you.

PRIZES:

Trophies will be mailed to the top three teams as well as the top individual. We reserve the right to increase the number of trophies and prizes as the field expands at our discretion.

FEES:

There will be a flat fee of $65 per team. A $20 discount is available to any school who brings a moderator. Fees are due at least one week prior to the event.

Payment can be made via mailed check, PayPal, Venmo, or Wire (if you insist). Please do not mail cash. Note that PayPal, Venmo, and Wire may charge an additional fee. We can process purchase orders and we will provide W-9 forms and invoices on request.

Write all checks to "The Long Island Quiz Bowl Alliance". Mail checks to P.O. Box 205, Nesconset, NY 11767.

REGISTRATION:

In order to register, follow one of these options:

-- Fill out THIS GOOGLE FORM
-- Email us at [email protected] or post in this thread with the following:
---- Number of teams
---- The name of your school, and pseudonym if applicable
---- An email address where we can reach you
-- We can also take registrations by phone; I cannot post the phone number here, but reach out and I will call you.

Once you receive a confirmation from us, you are officially registered.

Please ensure you register prior to the day of the tournament. The drop deadline is one week prior to the event, after which you will be responsible for the full amount due.

STATS:

Full and complete team and individual stats will be posted within 48 hours after the completion of the tournament.

If you have any further questions, please let us know!

NOTE:

This tournament will be following The Long Island Protocols for Handling Accusations of Cheating.

Teams cannot switch their registration from the Garden Cup to this event. Your registration will be declined. We would like to welcome you to help us staff, however!

This tournament was today! Detroit Country Day ran the field and won with a flawless 10-0 record, beating out Tenafly Middle School A in the final. Third place went to Lowell, followed by Wilmington Charter, Wakeland A, Wakeland B, Churchill, Coppell, Tower Hill, and Commack to round out the top 10.

Jeremiah Rayban from Wilmington Charter took home the scoring prize with a mind-blowing 142.5 PPG. Simon Emmanuel from Churchill, Aarush Santoshi from Tenafly Middle, and Raymond Zhang from Coppell also scored over 100 PPG.

Stats are up at this link.

We hope everyone enjoyed all the events we put on these past few months, and we're happy to say we'll be back for many, many more next season. No matter what happens, Quizbowl will go on. From everyone here at the LIQBA, thank you, and have a wonderful summer! See you in the fall!
