Country Roads Invitational [1/9/2021] [IS-195]

Post by athena001 »

Hello!

Morgantown High School Quiz Bowl is excited to announce our very own high school tournament, Country Roads Invitational, on Saturday, January 9, 2021! We will be using NAQT Set IS-195. This is a qualifier for the 2021 NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, and the top 15% of teams will qualify. There is a soft field cap of 24 teams. If we have enough interest, we will expand the field. The tournament will be held on Zoom, and COBA will be used for buzzing.

Registration and Eligibility
Tournament registration will be closed to teams from only Pennsylvania and West Virginia until December 21. Before December 21, teams from states outside of WV and PA may register but please understand that for all intents and purposes you are waitlisted so PA and WV teams may have a chance to sign up first. We are using NAQT’s registration system, and you may register and view the current field here: https://www.naqt.com/registration/field ... t_id=12104

Rules
Rounds are untimed, and each round will have 20 tossups. The morning rounds will be tossup only, and the afternoon and championship rounds will be tossup and bonus. Cameras are required, and mics are to be on during matches if at all possible. We will use NAQT rules, linked here, and online tournament modifications, linked here. Please note that tossup rules are unchanged, with teams receiving 3 seconds after the end of a tossup to buzz in, and 2 seconds to begin their answer after being recognized.

However, we understand that with online quiz bowl issues arise with accidentally being muted, unstable internet connections, etc. and in such situations it will be left to the moderator’s discretion to accept the answer or not. Teams will have 7 seconds to confer AND provide their answer for bonuses after the moderator has finished reading it.

Schedule
The tournament will begin promptly at 9 AM EST, and all participants are expected to join the Zoom by 8:45. All teams are guaranteed 10 rounds, so all teams are expected to stay for the entirety of the event. 5 preliminary rounds will be played in the morning, followed by a lunch break. Teams will then be seeded for 5 more rounds in the afternoon for playoffs. There will be additional championship rounds if necessary. The tournament will end around 4 PM.

Payment Information
Base fee: $60 per team

Each school that brings an experienced moderator to the tournament will receive a one-time $20 discount (for example, registering 2 teams and 1 moderator would give one $20 discount). However, schools are welcome to bring more readers! Payment may be made directly to readers as well.

Payment should be made by check, written to Morgantown High School, with ‘MHS Quiz Bowl’ on the memo line. Please mail checks to Nicole Liang at 4109 Sun View, Morgantown WV, 26505, postmarked by January 9.

Due to the way our school finances work we can only accept one online payment method, SchoolCash Online, which incurs a 4% transaction fee for the payer and is also a bit difficult to handle on our end. For all intents and purposes this is a last resort if your team absolutely cannot send a check.

Staff
We are opening the staff to experienced moderators and scorekeepers, although if you feel you are qualified but have not officially staffed a tournament before, please contact me at [email protected] :) A $20 stipend is available for all staff, and if you are interested, please fill out the Google form below. Staff are expected to join the Zoom at 8:30 AM.

Cheating and Misconduct
We will not tolerate cheating, and as such we have set certain rules in place. Cameras must be turned on throughout the tournament (as per NAQT rules), and mics are preferred to be on during matches, but not required. Most rooms will be double-staffed as well for a further safeguard.

If irrefutable evidence of cheating is found, the player will be kicked from the event and likely blacklisted in future events. We also reserve the right to tell local and national quizzing organizations about a player cheating if they are found to have cheated.

All players, spectators, and coaches must adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct, linked here. Players, spectators, and coaches should report misconduct either directly to staff or via the misconduct form found here. We take misconduct very seriously and will deal with all instances of misconduct.

Additional Information
Chimera teams are not allowed.
Teams are allowed to play under a pseudonym--please indicate as such when registering your team.

For any other questions, please contact me at [email protected].
