CORGI (Northeast RAFT II Mirror) - January 23, 2021

Post by kyrkazakh »

The quizbowl team at Choate Rosemary Hall is excited to announce we will be hosting CORGI, the Choate Online Regional Grand Invitational! This tournament will be held online through Discord on January 23rd, 2021. Lucas Eggers will be the Tournament Director and Joy An will be the Assistant Tournament Director.

Set and Structure: CORGI will be run on RAFT II, a regular difficulty high school set. More details about the set can be found here. For the sake of timeliness, the tournament will be tossup-only, and will follow ACF rules, with the following notable modifications and important rules:
- Answers given before the moderator verbally acknowledges a player will be counted as wrong.
- In the event that two players buzz in around the same time, the order of players will be decided by the order they appear on the moderator’s screen.
- Players will be given 5 seconds to answer after being acknowledged, 5 seconds to answer after being prompted, and 5 seconds to buzz in at the end of the question.
- All protests will be resolved at the end of the round if and only if their resolution would potentially affect the result of the game.
Teams playing this tournament will be seeded into preliminary brackets, and based on their performance, will be re-seeded into playoff and consolation brackets. All teams will be guaranteed at least 10 rounds, and will be expected to play the entire tournament.
The tournament will be held on Discord, and players should create a Discord account before the tournament begins. Instructions for this can be found here, and before the tournament we recommend that new Discord users read this and download the Discord app on their preferred devices, as the browser version can have issues. The Discord server invite will be sent out to teams’ contact emails some time prior to the tournament. In order to acclimate teams to playing quiz bowl on Discord, our staff will be happy to accommodate scrimmages on the Discord server before the tournament.
Please note that all players will have to have their video on during all rounds. If this poses any difficulty, please reach out to [email protected].

Teams: There will be a maximum of 6 players on each registered team, with up to 4 being allowed to play at any one time. Substitutions are allowed, preferably at halftime. Teams must consist of players from the same school (with potential exceptions made on a case-by-case basis for homeschool players and players from schools without quiz bowl teams), and players must be in 12th grade or below to be eligible for playing. Pseudonymous teams are gladly accepted, as are spectators, so long as we know before the tournament begins.
The affiliated school of every registered team must be in the extended Northeast region: that is, CT, ME, MA, NH, NJ, NY, RI, and VT.
For this tournament, we will encourage less established quiz bowl teams to participate alongside more established ones, especially those from Connecticut. Newer teams may be eligible for discounts (see Fees section.)

Schedule: The tournament will occur on Discord on Saturday, January 23, 2021 and will begin promptly at 9 AM EST. Players should be logged on by 8:30 AM EST. If all goes well, the tournament should be over by 4 PM EST, including finals.

Registration: Register your team using this form. Registration closes at 11:59 PM on January 21st. The drop deadline is a week before the tournament – should your team drop from the tournament after that deadline, you will be responsible for paying all registration fees. Your team does not have to have a full roster to register, but roster changes will not be allowed after midnight the day of the tournament. To make a roster change after registering, email [email protected].

Fees:
Base registration fee: $60 per team.
New team discount: -$30 per team, for teams from schools that have not attended a standard general-subject quiz bowl tournament in the past two years.
For staffer discounts, see Staff section below.
Payment for CORGI will be collected once your registration has been processed. Per Choate administration rules, payment can only be made by check or credit card. Invoices will also be available. If you are unable to pay for CORGI due to either financial or logistical constraints, please contact the CORGI team at [email protected] and we will do our best to find an alternate solution.

Field: The preliminary field cap is 24 teams, which we will expand if necessary. We are excited to announce CORGI is confirmed to be a Regular Qualifier Event for the 2021 PACE NSC, meaning the tournament's top 3 teams will qualify for the NSC!

Staff: We are happy to accept staffing help for this tournament. To express interest in staffing, fill out this form. Note that registering to staff does not guarantee that you will be able to staff. Staffers may be required to attend brief training sessions before the tournament to ensure that the tournament will run smoothly and without technological issues, hosted by Emma Hermacinski. For questions about this, email [email protected].
All staffers will be compensated $20 for their help. Alternatively, any team associated with a staffer can receive a $20 discount.

Stats: Stats will be posted on HSQB within 24 hours of the end of the tournament and will consist of full team and individual stats.

Cheating: We take this tournament very seriously, and we hope you will too. Any player suspected of cheating will be investigated to the full ability of the staff, and any confirmed cheaters will be instantly removed from the tournament and their team disqualified. This tournament will adhere to the PACE Honor Pledge, which can be found here.

Misconduct: All participants in this tournament, including staffers, must abide by the official cqb! code of conduct, which can be found here. Players and staff can report misconduct by reaching out to the TD, Assistant TD, or by using this form, whatever they’re most comfortable with.

Questions: If you have any questions, reach out to [email protected], [email protected], or reply to this forum post. We can't wait to see you at CORGI!

CORGI happened yesterday and went better than I could have possibly hoped! Congratulations to Hunter A for taking home the coveted 1st place corgi plush, to Hotchkiss A for their 2nd place finish, to Belmont A for coming in 3rd, and to all the teams who excelled and rose to the challenge yesterday! Special shoutouts also go to Cooper Roh (Hotchkiss A), Aiden Dartley (Ridgewood), and Carolyn Meng (Livingston B) for being the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd top scorers in the preliminary rounds respectively! Full stats can be found here: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/6724/. Thanks again to everyone who participated and to all those who staffed or helped bring this tournament to fruition.
