Northwestern Quizbowl is pleased to announce this year's edition of the annual Jr. Wildcat middle school tournament, to be held online on March 6th, 2021. I, Beni Keown, will be serving as tournament director for the tournament; I can be reached by email at [email protected].
Question set and format: This year's tournament will use NAQT's MS-37 set. Matches will be 4v4 and will consist of 16 tossup/bonus cycles with powers and negs. There will be no bouncebacks and no comp math. All timing will be 5 seconds. We plan on having 8 rounds of play for all teams.
Online Details: This tournament will use a hybrid model for communication and gameplay. Communication will take place on a Discord server, while gameplay will happen in individual Zoom rooms, using an online buzzer app to register buzzes. As such, all players and coaches will need both a Discord account and Zoom access. Also, to maintain legitimacy and discourage cheating, all players will be required to have their cameras on and showing their face when they are in a match.
Eligibility: Teams must be composed of students from the same school, and all team members must be in 8th grade or below. There is no limit on team size. There is also no geographic exclusivity, so teams from anywhere may register.
Fees: The cost for this tournament will be $75 for a school's first team, and $70 for each subsequent team. All payment must be made before the day of the tournament. We plan to accept payment via an online site like SignMeUp but do not have a payment system finalized yet; we hope to have that done soon and will update this post when a system is in place.
Registration: We will be using NAQT's registration system this year, which can be found here. Registration will open tomorrow, January 4th. We will not take registrations through email. As of now, the field cap is 30 teams, but this may expand if interest is more than expected. The current field can be found here.
