Virginia Spring Tournament at UVA (Online) - February 27, 2021 [SATURNALIA Mirror for MD, VA, DC, WV]

Post by Arabidopsis failiana »

The Academic Competition Club at the University of Virginia will be hosting the Virginia Spring Tournament on Saturday, February 27th, 2021 using the SATURNALIA question set. This tournament will be held online using Discord.

All teams will be guaranteed at least 9 games.

Geographic restrictions: This tournament is open to high school teams located in Maryland, DC, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Question set information: This tournament is using a hard high school question set. The questions used at this tournament will be more challenging than NAQT Invitational Series questions or questions used in VHSL play. We advise against sending inexperienced or novice teams to compete in this tournament. More information about the SATURNALIA set can be found here.

Affiliation: Our fall tournament was a platinum qualifier for the PACE National Scholastic Championship, and this tournament will likely meet that standard. This section will be updated when this tournament’s qualifier status is confirmed by PACE.

Team restrictions: Only 4 players can play at once, and there can be a maximum number of 6 players on each team’s roster, with substitutions possible at half-time and between games. If you wish to bring 7 or 8 players, we ask that you register a second team and so on for anyone with larger numbers of players.

All players must be enrolled at the same school; no chimera teams are permitted. If you have questions about eligibility, please send me an email.

Virginia public schools should be be aware of dates of VHSL events that may conflict with this tournament before signing up.

Fee structure
Base fee: $70 per team
Staff discount: $25 discount per staffer
Minimum fee: $0

Payment
We must receive your payment before the tournament starts, or you will not be able to play. Do not wait until the day of the tournament to pay; please plan to pay in advance. We can take payment by check, Venmo, or Zelle. On the registration form, you will be able to note which payment form you intend to use, and you will receive an email confirmation with details about how to pay. You can also request an invoice on the registration form.

The initial field cap for this tournament is 16 teams; after this is reached, teams will be added to a waitlist. The field may be expanded depending on the level of interest for this tournament. Until February 6th, only 4 teams from the same school will be allowed to register; additional teams will be added to the waitlist. After February 6th, these teams will be added to the field.

To officially register for this tournament, please fill out this form.

If your school has registered and would like to change any details of your registration, or if you have any questions concerning the tournament, please email me, Mark Bailey, at [email protected].

We look forward to seeing you online in February!

This tournament happened! It went well, primarily due to our amazing staffers: Alana Dickey, Caleb Bales, Finn Arthur, Charlotte Goeb, Daniel Xue, Isabelle Maule, Nima Razavi, Lucia Mayor-Mora, and Yashu Tang. Huge thanks to all of them. Additional thanks to the creators of YellowFruit, Shawrisheets, and the Discord Tournament Bot; all of these things fabulously facilitated the logistics and stats-keeping of this tournament. And of course, thanks to the writers and editors of SATURNALIA, whose wonderful questions we used.

Congratulations to our top teams:
1st place: Thomas Jefferson A (Pratyush Jaishanker, Justin Chen, Elliot Lee, and Vishal Kanigicherla)
2nd place: Richard Montgomery A (Justin Posner, Abhinav Karthikeyan, and Gus Carvell)
3rd place: BASIS Independent McLean (Cavan Gabaldon O'Neill, Ram Thammineni, Raleigh White, Nathan Hart-Hodgson, and Rithik Puli)

And congratulations to our top individual scorers:
Cavan Gabaldon O'Neill (79 PPG), Pratyush Jaishanker (71 PPG), Justin Chen (59.5 PPG)
