Princeton High School Academic Tournament XXVIII (PHSAT XXVIII) at Princeton University, 10/2/21

Post by 23slockwood »

This post has been updated to reflect a change in Princeton University's visitor policy - PHSAT XXVIII will be online this year.

The Princeton University Quiz Bowl Club will host the 28th Princeton High School Academic Tournament, PHSAT XXVIII, on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021. We will be using NAQT IS-204, which is standard high school difficulty. The tournament will be structured as a series of bracketed, round-robin preliminary matches followed by re-bracketed round-robin playoffs and consolation rounds after lunch. We will be using untimed NAQT rules for this tournament, but overtime will be sudden death, and players will have 5 seconds instead of 2 to give an answer after buzzing in. We will be skipping computational math tossups and bonuses. This tournament is intended for schools and teams who are looking for an early season, competitive tournament with other competitive schools.

Any questions about the tournament may be directed to me. Please use sel3 (at) princeton.edu to contact me, and put [PHSAT] as the first part of the subject line. If you're interested in staffing this tournament, please also email me; we need all the help we can get!

COVID Policy:
This event will be online. A Discord link will be sent out to registered teams on Thursday (9/30) night.

Registration and Fees:
The field is currently closed. We will be updating the current field from the waitlist until Wednesday (9/29) night, when the field will be finalized. Teams dropping after that time will still pay the expected tournament fee.

Currently, we do not plan on having a competitive/standard split.

First Team: $80
Additional teams: $70 per team

Moderator discount: -$10 per experienced moderator. A moderator must be available to help for the entirety of the tournament in order to receive the discount.
Scorekeeper discount: -$5 per experienced scorekeeper. A scorekeeper must be available to help for the entirety of the tournament in order to receive the discount.

Minimum fee per team: $50

Payment can be made in the form of mailed check. Checks should be made out to “Princeton University Quiz Bowl.”

To register for the tournament, please fill out this Google form: https://forms.gle/eEi4GU3S6AnBjYb38. If and when we need to contact you, I will email you directly. Please note that registering for the tournament is a commitment to stay for the whole tournament (barring any unforeseen circumstances).

Does the pivot to online for this tournament mean that there may be an expansion in field cap?

I've been updating the field each Sunday, as well as during the week when large changes in the field have occurred. As the tournament date approaches I'll update the field more often, as needed!

Just checking is the waitlist full? If a team can bring extra moderators do they move up in the waitlist? Thanks.
