Cavalier Classic XXIV - October 2nd, 2021 at the University of Virginia (IS-204)

Post by Arabidopsis failiana »

The Academic Competition Club at the University of Virginia will be hosting its annual fall tournament, the Cavalier Classic, on Saturday, October, 2nd using NAQT IS-204. This tournament will be held in person in Charlottesville; more information about the exact location of the tournament will be posted when we get confirmation about room reservations.

All teams will be guaranteed at least 10 games. We will not be using computational math tossups or computational math bonuses at this event.

Geographic restrictions: This tournament is open to teams located in Virginia, or within 200 miles driving distance of New Cabell Hall, Charlottesville, Virginia according to Google Maps.

Affiliation: The top 15% of the field will automatically qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, which is scheduled to take place at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and Hilton Atlanta in Georgia from May 27–29, 2022, which is Memorial Day weekend.

COVID-19 precautions: We are taking the health of tournament attendees extremely seriously and will be following and enforcing University policies for the tournament. Masks covering the nose and mouth will be required for everyone in indoor spaces and this policy will be strictly enforced. In between rounds, tables and buzzers will be wiped down. In addition, there will be no large meetings during the tournament to prevent large groups from congregating. Room capacities will also be strictly observed. Our intention for this tournament is for it to be safer, with more cleaning and less interpersonal contact, than a regular school day for in-person students. Finally, anyone displaying symptoms of COVID-19 will not be allowed to participate. The tournament will observe University, local, and state restrictions. Visitors to the University will have to follow the University’s current policies at the time of the tournament, which can be found here. Vaccination is strongly encouraged for attendees.

Team restrictions: Only 4 players can play at once, and there can be a maximum number of 6 players on each team’s roster, with substitutions possible at half-time and between games. If you wish to bring 7 or 8 players, we ask that you register a second team and so on for anyone with larger numbers of players.

All players must be enrolled at the same school; no chimera teams are permitted. If you have questions about eligibility, please send me an email.

Location and Parking
The tournament will be held in New Cabell Hall at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. We will be sending teams exact directions on how to get here and the room information.

UVA Events suggests parking at the Culbreth Road Parking Garage, which is free on Saturdays. However, this is about a 0.75 mile walk through Grounds. The Central Grounds Garage is about half as far but charges $1.50 per hour on Saturdays. For this reason, we suggest either arriving with plenty of time to walk this distance or dropping off your team before parking and returning. More information will be provided to teams by email and I will update this section with more info when I get the chance. Unfortunately, parking is not available to visitors at the Student Health Center, Bice House, or Bond House. Thomas Jefferson did not do a great job of planning for automobiles.

Food
To be updated.

Fee structure
Base fee: $75 per team
Buzzer discount: $5 for each system on which the control box and 8 buzzers work.
Staff discount: $20 for a competent moderator; $10 for a scorekeeper. The Academic Competition Club reserves the right to decide which staffers to accept for a discount.
Minimum fee: $0

Payment
We can accept payment in cash, check, Venmo, or Zelle. Checks should be made out to “Academic Competition Club at UVa.” Please pay either in advance or, preferably, on the day of the tournament. If you wish to pay in advance, please indicate this on the registration form and I will send you an address. All teams will be sent an invoice after we receive their registration.

The cap for this tournament is 24 teams; after this is reached, teams will be added to a waitlist.

To officially register for this tournament please fill out this form.

If your school has registered and would like to change any details of your registration, or if you have any questions concerning the tournament, please email me, Mark Bailey, at [email protected].

We hope to see you in person in October!

We would love to get to 24 teams in the field and it's not too late to register! There's currently room for 1 more team in the field.

I will be sending out an info email to registered teams tomorrow or Wednesday. We have room reservations and plenty of staff for this tournament and are really excited to be able to host this Saturday.

Edit to add: We will accept teams without any geographic restriction.

Congratulations to Detroit Catholic Central A, who went undefeated to win the tournament with a 10-0 record. Richard Montgomery A finished in second place. Congratulations also to all of the top players recognized with book prizes. Stats for this tournament can be found at https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/7046/. Prelim statistics are already posted and playoff statistics will be posted by tomorrow. A wrap-up email has also been sent to teams.

Thank you to all teams who attended this tournament; it was an absolute honor for Cav Classic to be my first time helping to direct an in-person tournament. I want to give enormous thanks to my co-organizers (Alana Dickey, Mark Bailey, and Em Gunter) and the 15 other staffers who made this tournament possible.

With that said, the UVA Academic Competition Club would like to comment on issues that arose with two schools regarding this tournament.

First, the coaches of Orange County High School were extremely rude to the directors of this tournament when dealing with an unforeseen parking issue. Their aggressive behavior persisted to the point that one of our staffers did not feel safe being unaccompanied near them. Additionally, they repeatedly ignored requests to abide by the University's indoor mask mandate. Their negligence to follow basic COVID-19 regulations became even more blatant after the resolution of the parking issue. Please note that there were no issues with the players from Orange County High School, who all exhibited good sportsmanship and respect for the mask mandate.

Second, Bishop O'Connell High School signed up three teams for this tournament, only to pull all three of them out the day before the tournament, after ignoring multiple emails requesting roster information in the weeks leading up to the tournament. This incompetent behavior is part of a pattern including (1) their appearance at last year's Cavalier Classic XXIII, to which they brought only six players for three teams, only three of whom played the entire day, and (2) their appearance at last year's VCU Fall IX, at which they brought only six players for two teams, despite signing up three teams.

For these reasons, we advise other tournament hosts in the region against allowing Orange County High School to sign up for their tournaments. We advise that all hosts require that Bishop O'Connell High School pay in-advance for any tournaments for which they sign up.
