Maine Quiz Bowl Alliance (MEQBA) Fall Tournament - 11/7/21 - (IS-205A)

Post by nicole. »

I am pleased to announce the first ever Maine Quiz Bowl Alliance (MEQBA) tournament, online (for now), for teams in Maine and Northeastern New England! All pertinent information is below.

Location and Dates

This tournament will take place Sunday, November 7th, 2021. It will take place on Zoom and buzzin.live. It will run from 9:30 AM Eastern Time/10:30 AM Atlantic Time to 5 PM Eastern/6 PM Atlantic.

Questions/Format

We will be using NAQT's IS-205A set. We will be using the standard 20/20 format and NAQT rules, but there will be no game clock. There will be no computational math tossups or bonuses (for all online MEQBA events).

Teams will be fairly placed into preliminary brackets before being re-seeded for playoffs. Teams will be guaranteed a minimum of 8 games; teams will be expected to play all 8-9 rounds, even if you are not in contention for the championship.

Regions:
In order to not impede other regions' use of the NAQT IS-205A set, we will set up regional boundaries. Below are the regions that we are allowing to play in this tournament.

Maine: All Parts

New Hampshire: All Parts

Massachusetts: Anything within a 150 mile driving distance radius of Lewiston, Maine.

Quebec: All Parts

New Brunswick: All Parts

Teams

There will be a maximum of 6 players per team, four of whom may play at once. If you wish to bring more players than that, please register additional teams. There are no exceptions to this rule. Teams may play short, with one player as a minimum. Nobody may switch teams during the tournament, such as from “A” to “B” or otherwise.

The field is capped at 24 teams for this tournament. You will be placed onto a waitlist if you miss the cutoff and will enter the field as teams drop or the field expands (if there is enough interest, we guarantee that the field will expand).

We are happy to allow pseudonymous teams and teams not directly sponsored by their district to register. However, we do have certain requirements for these teams, so please contact us via phone or email prior to registration and we will be happy to work with you.

It is not mandatory for a coach, parent, or adult to attend with their team; however, we must have a responsible adult's contact information on file in case if anything goes wrong.

Discounts:
We will be offering a $20 discount for teams that can bring a competent reader.

A team can order a set of questions used at each tournament for $20 per set, which I will either mail to you or drop off to a location within 60 miles of the Lewiston-Auburn area.

Prizes

Trophies will be awarded to the top 3 teams after each tournament and the very best individual with the highest average Points per Game overall. The eight or so high scorers at each tournament will be awarded book prizes. Trophies will be mailed to teams.

Fees

The fee structure is as follows:

$75 per team per tournament
$50 additional per team per tournament if no readers are brought
$0 additional if 1 reader is brought
-$25 for each additional reader
-$10 for each working buzzer set
$20 per question set, limit 1 per school per tournament
We can process cash and checks. Please make out checks to “Nicholas Pruitt”. You can mail checks, POs, and any other paperwork to 65 Campus Ave 7392 Bates College, Lewiston, ME, 04240.

Payment is due the morning of each event.

Registration

In order to register, sign up on the NAQT Website here. Once you receive a confirmation from us, you are officially registered.

Please ensure that you register prior to the day of the tournament! Registration for each event closes one week prior to each event.

Stats

Full and complete team and individual statistics will be posted within 48 hours after the completion of each event.

Please let us know if you have any further questions! You can ask in this thread or email [email protected]

We hope to see you at the first of what we hope is many Maine Quiz Bowl Alliance tournaments this November.
