Vanderbilt ABC Fall - Online (10/30/2021)

Post by sharathun »

Vanderbilt University Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce this year’s Vanderbilt ABC (Academic Bowl Competition) Fall, a high school tournament to be held on October 30th, 2021. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the spread of the Delta variant, and revised guidelines from Vanderbilt's administration, this tournament will be conducted entirely online. I, Sharath Narayan, will serve as tournament director. The first round will begin promptly at 9 AM CST, and the tournament should finish by 5 PM CST.

Questions:
This tournament will be run using NEWT (New Enterprising Writers’ Tournament). This is a high school regular plus difficulty set. More information can be found at viewtopic.php?f=109&t=25236.

Format:
The tournament will be conducted using Zoom. Rounds will consist of 20 tossups with three-part bonuses. There will be powers and negs, but no bounce back on bonuses. Teams will be seeded into preliminary brackets and playoff brackets will be determined based on preliminary record. All teams will be offered a minimum of 8 games, and statistics will be kept in full. Rounds will not be timed. Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated during the tournament. As the tournament is held online, players are highly encouraged to use a webcam that would be kept on during the matches to deter cheating.

Fees:
The fees for the tournament are as follows:
$70 for the first team sent by a school
$65 for the second team sent by a school
$60 for all subsequent teams

Discounts:
We will offer a $15 discount for teams that provide an experienced moderator for the tournament.

Registration:
This tournament is open to any HS (including JV) teams; we may have a separate JV division if there are enough teams. Teams can register for this tournament by sending an email to [email protected]. Teams that register will also be provided and required to fill out a form that affirms compliance with Vanderbilt's Protection of Minors policy. When registering, please let us know how many teams and moderators you expect to bring. The field cap is set at 24 teams. The last day to register for this tournament will be October 13, 2021.

Geographic Restrictions:
Though it is online, this tournament is intended to be played by teams within the broadly defined Southeastern region of the United States. Teams within other parts of the country might wish to seek other mirrors so as to minimize overlap between circuits.

Payment:
All payments should be mailed by the day of the tournament to the following address:

Sharath Narayan, President of Vanderbilt Quiz Bowl
PMB 355090
2301 Vanderbilt Place
Nashville, TN 37235-5090 USA

All checks should be made payable to Vanderbilt Quiz Bowl. Since payment will be by mail we will still accept payments that arrive up to one
week after the tournament. If we do not receive your payment by this time you will be subject to an additional $25 late fee.

Team Size:
Teams will consist of up to four active players and up to two substitutes for a total of six players per team. Players may not transfer between teams.

Prizes:
After the tournament concludes we will arrange for trophies to be mailed to the top three teams and book prizes to the top five individual scorers.

Contact:
Any questions about the tournament can be directed to [email protected].

Thank you everyone for competing in ABC Fall today! Kinkaid (TX) beat Chattahoochee A (GA) in a one-game final (with a score of 450-250) to take the championship for the tournament. Preliminary combined stats can be found here: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/7 ... nal_stats/. An issue with the stats report states that Chattahoochee A placed 4th instead of 2nd, because it ranks by overall record. We will try to correct this and reupload a fixed version soon. The rest of the results are correct.
