KITTEN hosted by Chattahoochee High School (2/5/2022 - IS-209A) (JV/Novice; in person)

Post by alisony.9 »

Chattahoochee High School is pleased to announce KITTEN, a tournament for novice Quiz Bowl players!
Our tournament will be held on February 5th, 2022 at:

Chattahoochee High School:
5230 Taylor Road
Johns Creek, GA 30022

Format:

The tournament is tentatively scheduled to be in person, but we will continue to monitor conditions and adjust according to our district’s COVID protocols. All KITTEN participants will have to adhere to Fulton County masking rules, whatever those are at the time of the tournament.

In the event that we are unable to host the tournament in person, we will host the tournament in an online format (likely Discord).

Both middle school and high school teams are permitted to play this tournament, which is aimed at providing an introductory Quiz Bowl experience for new players and JV/novice teams. We loosely define JV/Novice players as anyone in the 9th-10th grades OR is in their first year of playing pyramidal Quizbowl. Although we obviously won’t reject anyone from participating, we request that more experienced players either send a novice team or sit this one out.
  • Each team will play preliminary rounds in the morning and playoff rounds in the afternoon.
  • Lunch (pizza) will be available for purchase in the morning and lunch will be served after preliminary rounds.
  • The rules/format of the tournament are subject to change depending on how large the field is. We plan to cap the field at 24 teams.
  • Trophies/plaques will go to the top teams.
  • Book prizes will go to the top individual players.
  • We are planning to keep individual stats. Thus, we also request when you register to fill in the names of the players attending to the best of your ability. Any roster changes can be made when you check-in to the tournament.
Cost:
  • The cost will be $70 per team.
  • There will be a $5 discount for each working buzzer system (limit 2 per team).
  • There is a $20 "distance" discount for each team that is over 100 miles away (calculated from the shortest route on Google Maps) or from a different state than GA.
  • Registration payment can be brought in on the day of the tournament or mailed ahead of time.
  • Lunch will be $5 and will consist of two slices of pizza, a bag of chips, and a water or soft drink.
  • Make checks payable to Chattahoochee High School, and you may pay through mail (Chattahoochee High School 5230 Taylor Road Johns Creek, GA 30022) or on-site when you check-in to the tournament.
  • There will also be an option to pay online that will be set up at a later date.
Question Set:
We will be mirroring IS-209A.

Rules:
  • Rounds are 20/20 with one tiebreaker tossup if needed.
  • We will use powers (15) and negs (-5). Five players are allowed per team.
  • We will not use bouncebacks, and substitutes are allowed after each game only (rules are subject to change based on future field size).
  • Timing will be 5 seconds after the question to buzz, 5 seconds to give your answer once you buzz, and 5 seconds to confer and answer on bonuses.
If you have any questions please post here or email [email protected] (cc [email protected]). Please include "KITTEN" in the subject.

Thank you and hope to see you at the tournament!

Unfortunately, we have decided to postpone this tournament until a later date :( The feedback we have received is that a lot of schools have not begun practices yet and do not feel ready to compete. Many middle school teams have not even started their clubs for the year.

There seems to be a lot of interest, just not this soon. Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused, and we will make sure to update this post when we reschedule.

We are excited to announce that we have rescheduled KITTEN for February 5th, 2022! The original forum post has been updated to reflect changes - most importantly, we will now be mirroring NAQT's IS-209A instead of CERES.

If you previously signed up for this tournament (for the old October date): we kindly ask that you resubmit your registration and roster at this form: https://forms.gle/5DvkeuFhqKn4Lh396

Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, and we look forward to seeing your team on the 5th!

Update 1/10:

Due to expressed interest, we will be opening a separate Novice division for KITTEN. All players at the tournament should still be in the 6th-10th grades, but Novice high school players must be in their first year of playing pyramidal Quiz Bowl (or Academic Bowl). Any high school students who do not fulfill this requirement should play in JV.

Middle schools may register in either Novice or JV as desired.

The JV division will still have 24 team cap with single elimination playoffs, and the separate Novice division will have a 9 team cap (to run a Round Robin with all teams guaranteed 8 rounds of gameplay).

The form has once again been updated to reflect these changes.
