Gopher Fall Tournament @ UMN (CALISTO 2 on November 20th, 2021)

Post by BenWeiner27 »

The University of Minnesota Quizbowl team is excited to announce the Gopher Fall Tournament on Saturday, November 20th, 2021. The tournament will be an in-person mirror of the CALISTO 2 question set held in Folwell Hall on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus. I, Ben Weiner, will be the tournament director. This is a separate event from GIVNIT, which will be held this December as usual.

Question Set
CALISTO 2 is a high school regular difficulty house-written question set. This means that the set will be very similar to last year's RAFT II and LONE STAR sets (both of which have been mirrored in Minnesota) in terms of question matter and difficulty. Additionally, this set will be of comparable difficulty to a NAQT Invitational Series (IS) set, which are commonly used in Minnesota.

Payment
Base Entry Fee: $75
Buzzer Discount: -$5 for working buzzer system
Staffer Discount: -$10 per staffer with laptop
Long Range Discount: -$10 for each 100 miles traveled one way

Minimum Fee: $50 per team

Discounts will be awarded on a first come first served basis depending on the number of teams and the supply of house staffers. We will notify all teams on whether or not they will be receiving a discount they have requested at least 7 days before the tournament.

Teams registering for this tournament (or any other UMN tournament) will be invoiced by the University of Minnesota’s finance department with instructions on how to pay as the date of the tournament nears.

Any team cancelling after 11:59 PM CT on Thursday, November 18th, will be expected to pay full tournament dues.

Chaperones
Beginning in Fall of 2020, the University of Minnesota is requiring that all minors be accompanied by a chaperone to all on-campus events. As a result, each school (not necessarily each team) is required to have a chaperone of some capacity at this tournament. Teams that do not have an adult chaperone with them will not be allowed to play this tournament.

COVID-19 Policy
Per University of Minnesota policy, all players, coaches, staffers, and spectators will be required to wear a face covering at all times during the tournament.

Roster Size
There will be a maximum of 6 players per team. We recommend that teams that have more than 4 players consider splitting into multiple teams.

Registration
To register please fill out the following form: https://forms.gle/JEYN2Cj7xpvSUaGz8. There will be an initial field cap of 16 teams that we will expand if there is interest.

Feel free to contact suacb AT umn DOT edu for any concerns that you may have. We hope to see you on November 20th!

We've expanded the field to 18 teams. Additional teams looking to play this tournament should try to sign up as soon as possible as another field expansion is possible if teams register promptly.

This happened. Wayzata A defeated Wayzata B in the first game of an advantaged final to take the title. Eden Prairie A and Irondale A finished third and fourth respectively after tying Wayzata B for second in the playoffs forcing a series of play-in games. Congratulations to our top 4 teams and thanks to all participating teams!
