NNT - South Bend Mirror (11/15/08) - South Bend, IN

Post by evilmonkey » Fri Jun 06, 2008 9:21 pm

The South Bend Mirror of the No-Name Tournament will be run by the Quizbowl Club of Notre Dame on November 15th, 2008 at St. Joseph's High School, located just across the street from Notre Dame. We will be using the NNT question set co-edited by Ian Eppler and Shantanu Jha, and the questions will be at or slightly above IS level. Rounds will be tossup/bonus, with twenty questions per round. Also, we are PACE-NSC affiliated. For a rundown of what that means, go here, but know that at least the top two teams will qualify for PACE-NSC on May 23 and 24.

The tournament fees will be as follows:

$75 - First Team entered
$65 - Teams Entered after the first
-$5 - Each Buzzer System
-$5 - Each 150 miles driven *Clarification - One Way*
$45 - Minimum fee per school

Registration is now closed.

If you are interested or have any questions, feel free to contact me at bdurgin AT nd DOT edu.

Individual stats will be kept, with book prizes going to the top 4 or 5 as well as the top F/S.

EDIT:
Schedule
Registration will start at 8:30, and I would like to start an informational meeting at 8:55. If you have not called me by 8:50, I will assume that you are not showing up. However, if you call to tell me you are running late, then I will hold things up, unless you're going to be later than 9:20, in which case you'll have to take a forfeit of the first round. My phone number is 574-453-8330.

If non-catastrophic worst case occurs, then we will be done by 6:00. Otherwise, we should be done earlier.

Location and Directions
St. Joseph's High School is located at 1441 N. Michigan St., South Bend, IN 46617.

From Toll Road: Get off at Exit 77, and make a right at the light. Continue until you see St. Joseph's on your right, and make a right at the corner (this will be Angela St.). Make an immediate right into the parking lot

Field Update Above. Increased Field Maximum to 25.

EDIT: D'oh Size =/= Maximum. Also 25 works with fewer rooms that 24.

While not a rousing success, I was still fairly happy with the outcome of the tournament.

We ran 4 brackets of four, with the top two advancing to a bracket of 8. Then, we played a Full (minus one) round robin. Finally, we had an advantaged final between GPN and DCC (since they played each other in the final round anyway, it was essentially a best of 3).

Unfortunately, even though we held the tournament at St. Joe's, due to illnesses, most of their A team was not present. We still had a great tournament anyways.

Results:
1. Detroit Catholic Central A 10-0
2. Grosse Pointe North 8-2
3. Detroit Catholic Central B 7-2
4. Adams 5-4
T5. Culver A, DCC C, Northmont 4-5
8. Harrison A, 3-6

Top Scorers:
1. Jamie, Grosse Pointe North, 109.41 PPG
2. Brett, DCC A, 85 PPG
3. K-Van, DCC B, 63.33 PPG
4. Bryan, DCC A, 48.75 PPG
5. Adam, Adams, 43.89 PPG

Note that, with Ian's permission, I added power marks to the set.
Also, to ensure I could run the above tournament, I contacted Andy Watkins about using the HFT preliminary rounds to construct a tiebreaker set, plus one additional round. Unfortunately, because of some fatigue issues, I missed a couple of repeated clues.

I'd like to thank Ian for the hard work he put into this set. I'd like to thank Andy for being so helpful. Finally, I would like to thank Mr. Dillon, St. Joe's coach, for helping us out with facilities, trophies, logistical issues, and all the hard work he put in today. We really couldn't have done it without him.

I'll get up stats once I fix a few things that can't possibly be right (which, given that we are going to UIUC tomorrow, might not be until Monday). Also, I'm hopeless with computers, so I'll need to figure that out as well.

But of course, dear sir.

To clarify what this means, at least one--I believe two--rounds of this tournament were cannibalized from the HFT prelim rounds so that there would be enough rounds in the set. I don't know what the situation is--like, whether you know which rounds are ours or not or whatever--so please don't discuss anything AT LEAST until Weiner's mirror of our tournament is done tomorrow night. IN FACT NEVER SPEAK OF ANYTHING FOR ANOTHER WEEEEEEK

There is, our tournament next weekend. So no question discussion should be going on whatsoever.

I promise I haven't forgotten about stats - SQBS is acting up, and won't let me fix errors, so I may need to re-enter all of the games

EDIT (Wednesday afternoon): Stats will go up sometime tonight!

Here are the stats:

As I said earlier, we had 4 prelim brackets of 4 teams, with the top two from each moving on to playoff brackets of 8 teams with the game against the other advancing team carrying over.

Prelims
Playoffs, Final, & Carryover

Note: In the Playoff Stats, Round 0 is the carryover game. I'm trying to get the combined stats, but I goofed and saved over the prelims after making the linked reports, so...
