IAC - New Exams at Nationals

Post by TylerV »

IAC also has some exciting news to pass along for students in all grades in the USA. We will be holding a new slate of National History and Science Exams for students to compete in. These will debut at this year’s National Championships, both for Varsity and JV students in April in Arlington, and for Middle School and Elementary School students in June in Chicago. These will allow students to compete in various fields within history and science, including the following:

Varsity/JV History
  • National African-American History Exam
    National Asian History Exam
    National Historical Geography Exam
    National Latin American History Exam
    National Military History Exam
    National Women's History Exam
Varsity/JV Science
  • National Biology Exam
    National Chemistry Exam
    National Earth Science Exam
National Ecology & Environmental Science Exam
    National Physics Exam
Middle School/Elementary History
  • National African-American History Exam
    National American History Exam
    National Asian History Exam
    National Historical Geography Exam
    National Military History Exam
    National Women's History Exam
Middle School/Elementary Science
  • National Biology Exam
    National Earth Science Exam
National Ecology & Environmental Science Exam
With one exception (Varsity/JV Earth Science – more on that in a second), these will all take the form of 75 question multiple choice exams scored on the usual IAC basis of 2 points for a correct answer, 0 for a blank answer, and -1 for an incorrect answer. All of these exams are open to all students; there is no qualification necessary for any of these, nor any requirement to be competing in other events at the National Championships. For all of these Varsity & JV exams, 11th and 12th graders will be considered Varsity, and anyone in 10th grade and younger will be JV. The JV Division does not have a younger age limit; students in middle and elementary school are welcome to compete in it in April. The Middle and Elementary School exams will feature 4 separate age divisions: 8th grade, 7th grade, 6th grade, and Elementary School (i.e. 5th grade and younger).

All of these exams will cost $20 each. To register for the Varsity / JV exams (online registration runs through April 15), please use the main registration form here. Note that many exams run quite early in the morning. Registration for the Middle / Elementary School exams will open in a few weeks on this page (and also on the History Bee and Science Bee websites) and will run through May 31. Note that students can only register for 2 Middle School/Elementary School history exams if they will also be competing in the National History Bee National Championships. Once they have been assigned to a block, they can then sign up for two more. Some of the science exams have other restrictions with other competitions too – see the updated schedule here for further details. Walk ins may be accepted for all exams at both National Championships, but IAC reserves the right to cap walk-ins at any point for any exam, so please use the online registration forms if you / your students know that you wish to take exams; there is no registration limit on the number of students who can register for any exam online.

We are also excited to announce a new partnership with the US Earth Science Organization, who will be writing the two Earth Science Exams, and administering the Varsity / JV Earth Science Exam at Nationals. This will be a longer (2 hour) exam, and students can thus have a chance to qualify for Team USA-Earth Science which will be attending the 2020 International Earth Science Olympiad in Tyumen, Russia this coming August! Further details can be found here and here.
