Live Online Quizzes for Individuals & Teams from IAC

Post by Great Bustard »

IAC is delighted to announce that beginning tonight, Friday, April 17, we will be starting a weekly series of online quizzes. These are accessible on the IAC Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/iacompetitions/

These will run as follows:

Tuesdays: 7:30pm New York, 4:30pm Los Angeles, 7:30am Wed. Beijing
Fridays: 7:30pm New York, 4:30pm Los Angeles, 7:30am Sat. Beijing
Saturdays: 7:30pm New York, 4:30pm Los Angeles, 7:30am Sun. Beijing
Sundays: 1:00pm New York, 10:00am Los Angeles, 7:00pm Berlin

The themes / divisions are as follows:
Tuesdays: Varies: Apr. 21 - Geography, Apr. 28 Military History, May 5 Geography, May 12 Science, May 19 Geography
Fridays: History - School Teams
Saturdays: General Knowledge - Teams
Sundays: History - Individual

Note the following guidelines:
A. The quizzes are nominally free of charge, but we request a donation of $1-$10 per player if you are able to afford it, as part of the reason for the quizzes is to keep our staff employed (since we're unfortunately not doing our usual preparation for our championship events this time of year). Donations can best be paid via Venmo by sending payments to @Nolwenn-Madden
though checks payable to International Academic Competitions and sent to 15 Lafayette Place, Burlington, VT 05401 USA are fine too.

B. The two team quizzes are open to individuals as well. However, on Friday, we encourage school history bowl teams to play together. There's no limit on team size (you'll need to coordinate how best to chat with each other), but all players must be from the same school.
On Saturday, there's a limit of 6 players on a team, and here we ask that you play with your families. Many of the questions here will be of the sort that parents, grandparents, and older siblings can answer (i.e. less academically focused with more general knowledge questions). We'll further break divisions down here based on the oldest child on the team. There will also be an open division here, so that anyone is welcome to form a team with friends and compete. The two individual quizzes will also have open divisions for older players. Otherwise, the divisions will be Varsity, JV, Middle School (7th-8th grade), and Elementary (6th grade and younger).

C. We have encountered a few instances of cheating over the past few weeks in our Online Picture Quiz (which continues on a weekly basis at https://www.iacompetitions.com/usa/picture-quiz/ - submissions are due by 11:59 pm New York time on Monday, April 20) and in our online B and C Set mirror tournaments. Please note: for the 4 live online quizzes, there are no prizes involved, and we fail to see how cheating on these (i.e. no googling, no outside resources, no asking answers from people not on your team / not yourself) results in a good time for anyone.
Life itself is lived on the honor system and it is always more fulfilling to have earned a legitimate victory, or even a legitimate last place finish (where you still have learned something!) than a finish that you didn't earn, and that denigrates the achievements of teams who played honestly. Please don't cheat! If that weren't reason enough not to cheat, many of the instances of cheating so far have been obvious to us (we have ways of checking, including follow up questions to specific players in individual chats). Players caught cheating risk bans from future IAC live events, and IAC reserves the right to let other quizzing organizations know of cheating as well.

D. In terms of difficulty, there will be quite a bit of variability within the questions, so that both novice and experienced players can answer questions, and that both middle school and high school teams can play along in the team competitions.

E. All live quizzes will be based off the IAC Facebook page which can be accessed at https://www.facebook.com/iacompetitions/ . Submissions will be done by google forms; links to the answer sheet for each round will be posted. We'll have a team of graders, so unless we get completely swamped, we should have standings ready very soon after the quizzes end. All quizzes should last about 90 minutes - 2 hours.

F. As players outside the USA are actively encouraged to compete in these, the questions will have a smaller amount of US history content than players in the USA are used to.

G. The exact format of each quiz will vary, and will be explained by the emcee / tournament director at the start of each quiz. The quizzes are not buzzer-based at all.

H. No pre-registration is necessary, but please be online through the relevant link on our Facebook page at least 5 minutes in advance of the start time.
