SCOP10 Novice Set 2019-20

Post by TheDoctor »

The SCOP Novice 10 set will be available for mirroring from 12 October 2019 through April 2020. In the past, the set has typically stopped running whenever prospective mirrors have run out, so if you want to use the set after the first week of April, it's best to get in contact as early as possible. As in the past, this set will be edited down into an associated middle school-level set, which will be available to mirror in January 2020. Previous years' questions are available on our website and posted in the archive.

The set includes eleven rounds of 20/20 (tossups/bonuses) and a half-packet of 10/10 replacement questions. Tossups are powermarked. Bonuses have three parts, which are designed to be read one part at a time. If you are planning to use this set in a non-standard format (e.g. if you're planning to run your tournament in timed format or with more than two teams per room, or if you want to use a local match format that only uses bonuses in the second half, etc.), you must confirm this with me prior to receiving the set or incur financial penalties.

Distribution
SCOP Novice's distribution per round is:

5/5 Science (including 1/1 non-computational math)
4/4 Literature
4/4 History
2/2 Religion and Mythology
2/2 Fine Arts
1/1 Geography
1/1 Current Events, Philosophy, and Social Science
1/1 Pop Culture

Fees
The fee to use SCOP Novice is $11/team (including house teams). There is a $1/team discount for complete statistics (in SQBS or Neg5 format with complete individual statistics and with round report enabled for SQBS) posted promptly after the tournament. There is an additional $2/team discount if you choose to email or snail mail your raw scoresheets to me for the calculation of conversion statistics by topic.

The cost of hosting SCOP10 includes a $1/team increase on the price of the set in previous years. Hosts who post statistics in an appropriate format promptly after their tournament will still pay only $10/team, which is a pretty standard cost per team for many sets. Hosts who go above and beyond to send in their scoresheets will pay $8/team, which is only a 56-cent-per-team increase on the average cost of hosting on SCOP Novice 9 in 2018-19.

If your tournament is in need of further discounts, especially if you're in a developing circuit, feel free to inquire about lowering your mirror fee.

Middle School Set
A parallel middle school set will be based on this question set, and will be available to mirror from January through April of 2020. Some of our novice-level questions will be edited to a lower difficulty to suit middle school teams, and some categories will be expanded or reduced to better reflect the middle school canon. The middle school set is available for mirroring in Illinois.

Illinois
SCOP Novice is not available to be mirrored in Illinois, where the set is used exclusively for the IHSSBCA Novice tournament series. I'm also the Novice manager for the IHSSBCA, so if you are interested in hosting an IHSSBCA Novice site, please let me know. The MS set may be mirrored in Illinois.

Prospective mirror hosts, or anyone with questions about the Novice or Middle School sets, may contact me at [email protected].

Might Purdue be a mirror site again this year, as we were last year? We have a tournament date set for November 16th and would very much like to partner with all of you folks again!

Hello,

Gate City High School is highly interested in using SCOP 10 for our tournament (exclusive to Southwest Virginia Academic Team Alliance schools only) on November 9th. I've sent emails, but I'm not sure if they're reaching the right place.

Thank you!

Due to widespread cancellations in light of COVID-19, the set will have a final online mirror on April 19, and will be posted to the archive soon after. Thanks to everyone who used the set this year!
