LOGIC Set Available for 2019-20 Mirrors (HS Regular)

Post by trbenedict »

This is a mirror announcement for Lots Of Good Interesting Content (LOGIC), a high school regular-difficulty set available by OCTOBER 1, 2019. Questions will be written by the quiz bowl teams at Miami Valley School (Dayton, OH), Adlai E. Stevenson HS (Lincolnshire, IL), and University Lab School (Urbana, IL). We also have a small team of freelance writers, mostly recently-graduated HS quiz bowl players.

Jacob O’Rourke will be LOGIC’s head editor, and subject editors are Olivia Lamberti (literature), Geoffrey Chen (science/philosophy/social science), Ethan Strombeck (history/visual FA), David Dennis (auditory FA/CE), Conor Thompson (math) and Will Alston (religion/myth).

LOGIC will include 13 powermarked packets of 21 tossups and 20 bonuses, as well as an additional "replacements" packet. The set will be ready for national mirrors on November 1, 2019. The mirror fee will be $10 per team playing the set.

The LOGIC distribution is below.

4/4 Literature (1.5/1.5 Long Fiction, 1/1 Non-Epic Poetry, 0.75/0.75 Drama, and 0.75/0.75 Short Fiction/Other)
4/4 History (1/1 American, 1/1 British/European, 1.5/1.5 World/Commonwealth, 0.5/0.5 Ancient/Other)
4/4 Science (1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 0.5/0.5 Other Science, 0.5/0.5 Mathematics)
3/3 Fine Arts (1/1 Paintings & Sculpture, 1/1 Classical Music, 0.5 Other Visual [architecture, dance, film, photography, etc.], 0.5/0.5 Other Auditory [opera, jazz, ballet, world, etc.])
2/2 "Beliefs" (1/1 Religion, 1/1 Myth)
1/1 "Thought" (0.5/0.5 Philosophy, 0.5/0.5 Social Science)
1/1 Geography
1/1 Current Events & Pop Culture

The extra tossup in each round will come from any category other than TRASH/Current Events.

Tossups will not exceed 6 lines and bonus parts/lead-ins will not exceed 2 lines in 10-pt. Times New Roman. There will be no computational math in the set.

To schedule a LOGIC mirror or ask any questions, please email tyler DOT benedict AT mvschool DOT com. Thanks for considering LOGIC this season!

Conor Thompson will be editing math for LOGIC and Will Alston has come on board as LOGIC’s religion and myth subject editor, completing our editing roster. The main LOGIC post has been updated to fully list the editing staff and their categories.

Edit 6/21 to add Conor Thompson to this post!

An excellent question! After discussing it with our writing and editing team, the set has played for most teams like an IS set, so we agree that WHAQ III is the closest house write to match our difficulty. The WHAQ III set can be found here.

Given the large amount of cancellations that are likely to result due to the COVID-19 outbreak, are there any plans from the production staff to try to run an online mirror of LOGIC?

Here's the poll.
April 19th won the date poll, so that will be the date of the online mirror. Expect a post for the mirror to be up by the weekend.
