Quizbowl Schedule Generator

Post by Whiter Hydra »

The Quizbowl Schedule Generator

I created a tool that will automatically generate a Quizbowl schedule. Simply tell it how many teams you're expecting, the format you want to use, and fill in the brackets and room numbers, and it will do all the hard work for you! It comes with a live preview and the ability to edit your schedule as you see fit, including filling in playoff teams. In addition, it will provide individualized printable schedules for each team and room.

Features in the works, in approximate order of priority:
  • An FAQ and a beginner's guide to schedules
  • Adding schedules that ensure all rounds have at least one bye (for packet-sub tournaments)
  • Probably a better method of allocating playoff teams within their brackets
As usual, if anyone has any questions, suggestions, or bug reports, please let me know.

This is very cool, and something I've been thinking ought to exist for a while.

I've added some more schedules for tournaments between 4-10 teams. Assuming nothing surprising happens, I should have all of the suggested ACF formats available with time to spare before ACF Fall.

In addition, I fixed a couple of issues regarding escaping characters and a really dumb bug involving bracket IDs, so if you did have a schedule created, you might want to go ahead and double-check to make sure that didn't mess anything up.

Thank you to everyone for helping me test this. I'd almost certainly miss something crucial if it weren't for you guys playing around with this tool.

This is a really nice project for the community, and will be extremely helpful for new tournament directors.

There should now be schedule templates up for all ACF and NAQT-approved college formats up through 24 teams. The one caveat is that at the moment some schedules (I think 16 and 20 teams, for a couple of examples) don't have byes built-in, so if you're hosting ACF Fall, were planning on using this, and are in need of a schedule with byes, please let me know and I can add one in.

I believe I caught all of the errors, but please go through and make sure there aren't any mistakes before you use these schedules in a tournament setting.

Oh my god, thank you so much!

Could you add a QR code to the website so people don't have to type up a URL?

There are a number of websites that will allow you to generate a nice easy-to-remember URL like [site]/2019fallcanada.

Generated schedules should now be printable and give you a QR code that'll take you to the web page. In theory they should work with all schedule formats without any wonky printing issues, but if you see something arise please let me know.

Additionally, you can now print schedules for each individual team and room! (Example here)

Since ACF Regionals is approaching, I have created schedules with byes for 12, 16, 20, and 24 teams. If you're running a tournament with a different number of teams that needs byes and doesn't, let me know and I can quickly whip up a schedule.

In other news, I have a Patreon if you want to support me.

I've changed the way some brackets are arranged such that if teams are listed by seed, the top seeds shouldn't be playing each other early. I still highly suggest that before committing to a schedule, TDs should give it a good sanity check to make sure there are no major feng shui issues and rearrange teams as needed.
